The "ribbon cable fastener" is a little loose though, could that be the cause? If so, any ideas on how to test this?

As in:
The ribbon cable can move around once the connector is closed?
If so, it's a likely culprit. If the ribbon cable end traces don't line up with the connectors, well..................
Also, check the "barrel" connector in the vga/usb line if you have one on your model. Mine was loose once and caused a white screen condition.
One other thing to check is some people have found thier lilli's have a bit too much room in the connector for the ribbon cable. This allows the ribbon to come out of alignment with the terminals in the connector. Most have gotten around this by holding the cable against one end of the connector or the other (depending on your model) to keep the parts in alignment as the connector is fastened.
