Single DIN with drive bay?
Greetings, Just starting out on this undertaking.
I'm looking at in dash (Single DIN) LCD's such as the Xenarc 700IDT.
It appears that there's enough space to mount a slim style laptop optical drive under it... Unless it's full of other electronics.
Does anyone produce a Single DIN pull out (Motorized or not... I'm not all that lazy.) type LCD with a drive bay under the LCD?
I'd assume it'd have to be USB. I can't see IDE cables reaching from anywhere in the car to behind the dash... And I don't forsee putting the Motherboard in the dash. Simply no space... But if IDE is available, I'd be happy with that.

BTW, what would operating limits be on IDE?
Back in the day of my Pentium 300, before the days of USB Flash Keychain drives and high speed ethernet, I used to have 4 ft of IDE cable strung out the front of my computer through one of those removable IDE hard drive trays... It had a key that'd turn the power off for safe removal of the drive.
Worked like a charm. Unshielded too. Although with my alternator whine, I think I'll need some shielding. I hear it in my Yaesu two way radio.
Then also, how would one move audio from the CD drive to the computer? Full sized drives for desktop PC's have an audio connector. Do slim drives?

I the idea for the DIN drive bay is to use an IDE->USB adapter so that you just run a USB cable to your hub or PC and not have to worry about running a long IDE cable. USB is good for 16'.

One final question...
I can't find a hardware installation guide for the IDT... They only have the driver manuals that detail the installation and configuration of the drivers.
Does it support ISO-DIN mounting? I don't like the little bendy tab DIN rings if I have two screw on brackets that go on either side.

My buddy has a 700IDT and I can tell you its slightly wider than ISO DIN, by a millimeter or two. In his Subaru Outback, he's needed to trim his console bezel a bit to get it to fit. I tried to slide it into an ISO DIN bracket on my dash and it was rediculously tight. I guarantee it won't fit in one of those metal sleeves. But it does have threaded bolt holes in the sides for mounting, though I'm not sure of their locations.

Wait. Maybe I'm mistaken on the terms...
I thought DIN was with the little sleeve that has the bendy tabs on the outside... You shove the ring in the slot and bend the little tabs out behind the dash to grip it...
I thought ISO-DIN was for that same size stereo that would fit in the sleeve, but has two bolts on the edge that attach a bracket. Bracket attaches to car... You don't use the sleeve.
This is how my car is set up and this is what I wanted...
Hmmm...
I know the 1997-2001 Toyota Corolla is like this, as is the Honda Passport/Isuzu Rodeo... Maybe I should see IDT installations in these vehicles.

Yes, you sound correct. I must be mistaken on my terms. Either way, the 700IDT is slightly larger than your standard 1-DIN head unit - wider. It will be better using brackets to attach (and this is what Subaru does and it does mount properly), but it may require some stretching/trimming of the radio trim. The nice ting about using the brackets is that if they're removable, you can always drill a new hole if the holes on your HU/monitor don't line up like you want them to.

I'd be more than a little wary about drilling holes in a $450 LCD screen.

Okay, what other Single DIN LCD displays are out there?
The 700IDT, and what others?
Retractable/pull out... I don't care if it's motorized or manual. (In fact, I'd prefer manual.)
Decent daylight view
VGA/DVI connector
That's pretty much all I care about at the moment.

I've been looking around for single DIN LCD displays also. I've found:
Lilliput GL701
DigitalWW DWW-700M
Xenarc 700IDT
Xenarc X7000
I believe all of these are motorized with VGA inputs. I've read some of the forums and it seems the 700IDT is the best option and has decent customer support.
