Aluminum foil vs two way mirror for transflective functions?

I was reading through a few posts on do it yourself upgrades to LCD displays. Someone mentioned using aluminum foil as a cheap alternative to a two-way mirror. I also understand that a two way mirror would reduce the amount of backlight that makes it through, so backlight would have to be supplemented by LEDs.

I am considering using a two-way mirror as a cheap transflective upgrade to my monitor and replacing the CCFL with LED lights to light up the monitor. How viable is this option?

The vast majority of the improvent for a transflective comes from the bonding of the TS to the LCD.

Take your touchscreen layer out of your screen and hold your monitor in the sun. It will look pretty good. Put the TS layer back on, and glare-zilla rears its ugly head.

If you want a cheap upgrade options that does the same thing, look at the 3M films. You can buy small sheets on ebay. Less intrusive. Results for me were good. Others not so good. Works on the same principle as the mirror, but it is a sheet.

I've been wondering....instead of permanently bonding the touch screen to the LCD, couldn't you just put some sort of gel in between the TS and LCD. If it has an index of refraction close to that of the TS, it seems like it would yield the same results as bonding

I've been trying to find a silicone gel that would work. But the only thing readily available is clear silicone adhesive from the hardware store. The problem is how well it'll perform over time and how to minimize air bubbles.

I'm also looking at how to properly thin the silicone to make it easier to spread.
