Looks like no one answered this question. Does this monitor have EDID?
From the Features list it says "Auto detects 800x480 resolution." Don't know if that means EDID or something else.
I'm looking at Inte's new motherboard DG45FC and G45 express chipset isn't yet supported by powerstrip. So, I'm trying to find something that will work with this mobo and give me 800x480.
Any ideas out there?

It'll be so good to know that somewhere under all that blinding glare from the sun is a resolution properly identified by the graphics card.

Not sure if it is EDID but I am sure 800x480 will be detected if your video card can be configured into this mode. I have been using 800x600 as I don't have native support for 800x480. The monitor still remains sharp and clear. Any other monitor mode I set was detected by the Xenarc.
The bad news is that my monitor is dead and becasue I opened the case to get it into the dash, I have no warranty. The power switch won't work and the monitor is permanantly turned off. Xenarc have told me:
Usually, with a problem similar to yours, the main control board will need to be replaced. Cost to replace the control board is $140 + shipping. We ship by UPS, with shipping depending on weight of the package. Shipping (to Australia) will probably be about $70.
So I am not very happy down under at the moment. I will eventually get it repaired. after the Christmas/New Year holiday has taken its course.

How did that Happen Rod?
Man sorry to hear that! That's terrible. Mine is looking just like yours, with the IR PCB exposed at the moment, and the back open - molded into the dash.
I called xenarc to inquire about a replacement housing, to replace my buttons that were thrown out and was told that sometime after the new year I should be able to order them.

Hi all, I've purchased this exact same monitor for my carpc, and figured I would post my experience so far.
To make a long story short, I am having (what I think are) power issues with my screen. The problem seems to get much worse in colder weather (0-17C). The LEDs on the 'button' board will light up, so I know it is getting power, but the screen itself does not turn on. I have checked all connections, and I know they are good. The only way to fix it is to unplug the power connector and plug it back in repeatedly. Sometimes it works after one power 'cycle' and sometimes it still won't turn on after many cycles (this usually occurs if it's especially cold out). This has happened so many times I can't even count.
I've got the PC and input box for the screen in my trunk, with the 17' extension cable going to the screen, which is mounted in my dash. Of course, like Rod, I had to take the screen out of the case to mount it, thus voiding my warranty.
Aside from this, I think the screen looks decent. I'm not familiar with any other screens, so have nothing to compare to. Everything works in linux, even 800x480 resolution, although it was a real pain to get the touchscreen calibrated. It is extremely bright, in fact too bright at night, even with the backlight on the lowest setting. I think that is a limitation of CCFL, though. Regardless, it looks great on a sunny day but I have to cover the screen up at night when I am driving.
Looks like I'll be hunting for a new screen. What a costly mistake... On the bright side (har har), I can make sure it is LED backlit this time, so I can turn the brightness way down at night.

Dan,
Have no idea what ocurred. It happened on the first time off road, and I seem to remember the Opus power supply did something funny and would not turn off until after I disconnected the fuse. Not sure if that contributed to it or was caused by it.
Anyway, I'd tape the buttons up completely just in case. I wondered about soldering some wires onto the top side of the monitor buttons and extending them to new switches that you could mount somewhere. They are all only momentary push button switches. It would not matter if the originals stayed in place as pressing the new switch would close the circuit. You just would not have the LED indicators. If you did that, it would be asey to mount the switch daughter board behind the monitor. I might do some checks with a multimeter before I send the monitor away.
I will be waiting until RaidGear on eBay comes good with the extension ribbon as I have a dispute with eBay/Paypal over that as the goods never arrived before I get too carried away. In the mean time, I bought an Alpine ipod compatible head unit so I can listen to some music...

Slate, missed your post, let me know which monitor you choose.
Your mistake is not as costly as mine as the Aussie dollar has depreciated by about 30% since I bought the monitor to make things worse. Sounds like your problem is identical to mine.
I can assure you that my issue is definitely not the cold, it's hitting about 35 degrees C here today (about 95 degrees F).
It is disappoinitng to see more than one faulty monitor out there, mine is only serial #243

Come to think of it, I haven't been able to use it in really hot weather yet. I just know that it started getting bad once I got it in the car (about a month and a half ago), and since we are hitting winter here in the states, it has been getting steadily colder, so I made that assumption. Do your button LEDs still light up also?

That's very interesting to hear. I went and looked at the back cover of mine, and it's #239. Probably from the same lot... Maybe it was a bad reel of parts?

Yes, the fault you have described is identical to mine. All lights on, but power LED stays red. $210 (including freight) for a faulty part is pretty hard to take.
Interesting the serial numbers are so close, but does not help either of us...
I wonder how many more out there have failed?

it goes bad at around 0 to +17*C? thats very strange, because my 701tsv (almost the same only difference is its not LED backlit) and it works great -35*C (not bright, but turns on and brighter as it warms up)

Punky, I'd say the low temp is not the cause if it is happening in hot climates as well.

I decided to go with the lilliput 629GL. It's fairly cheap compared to the xenarc, and has an LED backlight. I know people have had problems with this brand as well, but we don't really have much choice, do we? I'll be surprised if it can match the brightness of the 706, but I'll try and post a comparison when it arrives.
In the mean time, I took the PC and monitor out of my car and set everything up on a table in my house. The monitor has been turning on as it should now, but I think there are still issues. When it does turn on, there is a very high pitched whine. It sounds like my old CRT tv, but even louder. This eventually subsides after it warms up. I'm convinced that it is something to do with the CCFL inverter. The way I understand it, if the inverter cannot produce the correct voltage to strike the plasma in the fluorescent tubes at power on, the backlight simply does not turn on.
Now that I'm getting the other screen, I think I can work up the guts to tinker around with this one.

sorry if you have mentioned this somewhere already? but do you have access to the power button? can u turn it on with power button when it doesn't power up?
I say this because, i had a xenarc 700tsv, and the auto-on does not work very well, and i believe it was a faulty board.
