SpySupply's Ultrabrite Upgrade?
Hello,
First post here. I am looking into purchasing a xenarc vga + touchscreen. Spy Supply offers an ultrabrite upgrade for the xenarc LCD's. I'd like to find out:
1) What they are doing to increase the brightness?
2) Is the screen backlight running outside its rated specs?
3) Is it worth the upgrade price for outdoor use?
4) I am very comfortable around anything electronic, is this something I can do myself?
5) I have heard other people say they added a second inverter to increase the brightness of their LCD screens, how exactly is this wired up? Did the screens have an extra connector for a second inverter?
Thanks for everyones help.

Bump for more ideas, information, thoughts.
Anyone want to hook up another invertor to their Xenarc backlight?

Spy Supply's Ultrabrite Upgrade
Bump.
Anyone have this upgrade? How do you like it?
Any reports on the Xenarc's visibility in general (inside a vehicle). Is this really a necessary upgrade, or is it OK stock.

I have to admit, the Xenarc is a little difficult to see in my car when the suns out... Not impossible, but is a little frustrating.
I emailed Spy Supply about the Brightness upgrade, apparently it's not something you can do yourself. Too bad, I'll have to buy another unit to get it...

Well....if i was spy supply and i was selling ultrabrite upgrades for $195 then i wouldn't tell you that you could do it yourself either, even if it was the easiest thing to do in the world.....but that's just me. heh.
I think the best possibility for information would be xenarc. They might tell you their inverter specs and share the specs of the backlight in that panasonic screen.

nice spec sheet. bout don't see anything on the backlight. i doubt the mod would be that difficult and that costly. most likely its a translucent screen with a light source on the side (top & bottom or side to side) this method is very common with backlit screens due to cost and power drain.
So, it should just be a matter of switching out the light source.
Has anyone got the upgrade? If so would you mind opening it up and checking for us

If they are increasing the brightness more than double, I think another appropriate question is if there is enough LCD contrast to keep the display from looking washed out from the extra brightness?

Translation of Page 11/22 lower part.
(2) Backlight Section FL tube Part No. HMLVK24B65G162/100NS/AXZ Ta = 25° C
ITEM SYMBOL MIN TYP MAX UNIT REMARKS
TUBE CURRENT IL _ 7 _ mArms
TUBE VOLTAGE VL _ 500 _ Vrms
POWER CONSUMPTION PL _ 3.5 _ W
Frequency FL 40 _ 120 kHz
Starting Voltage VS _ _ (850) Vrms Ta=25° C
_ _ (1100) Ta=0° C
Life Time 10000 _ _ hour
Here is some info i acquired on the backlight. I don't know if this means it is a weak backlight or if the inverter is not supplying the power it is capable of handling. Someone want to test the inverter's output current?

This is a good thread. I hope someone is knowledgeable enough in this area to offer and alternative to the $190 upgrade...
