How big is too big?
My search for a new LCD has gotten me thinking. I'm putting the monitor on a jotto desk in an Xterra. I figure the distance between it and my eyes will be about 18" 10" is definitely too small. I haven't come across anything in a touch variety over 12.1" So, anyone have some ideas on how big is too big?

You can buy touch overlays for 12.1" and there are plenty of 12.1" around because it used to be a common laptop size. But you're smoking crack if you think 10.4" is too small! Most people here think 7" is 'big'. I think 8.4" and 10.4" are nice sizes, but anything bigger just becomes a pain in the but to install and takes up too much space in your dash. There is nothing you should be doing while driving a car that would require a bigger screen.
For back seat you could get a 14" or 15" for pretty cheap, but at that point why even do touchscreen? If you have that much space to have a huge monitor you have space for mouse and keyboard too. But apparently this computer isn't going to be used by the driver or for things like mp3, gps, etc... so why not just have passengers use a laptop?

I agree, what are you going to be doing that a 10" is too small? Also, the largest touchscreen I have seen is 12.1". You might call elo or some of the other manufacturers and see if they plan on or can make a 14.1 or 15 overlay, but damn man, live with a 10"

10" is too small due to the GPS program. With a 10", I only have a map viewing area of about 3x4". I don't want to have to stare at the map in order to get the info I need. With a large screen, I can simply glance at it. I will also have a keyboard and mouse - can't right click with a touch screen. I wouldn't say I'm smoking crack - it's a matter of proportions - you wouldn't put 31" tires on a Mini, but they look perfect on a truck.

Have you guys ever been to Hong Kong International Airport? They have 42" Plasma wide VGA touch screens all over the place for airport navigation. It tells you where the nearest restroom, food, and shops are. It also gives you directions on how to get to your gate. When I first saw it, my jaw dropped. I was thinking damn that would look good on my dash.

yeah it would look good, but you'd need to be driving a dump truck or something.
or else replace your whole dash with the screen, no more dash, nothing, just screen.

If it's wider or taller than your car, then it's too big. I would get new GPS software.

ok I would like to add to this post .
My eye sight is fine for driving but viewing my laptop 15 inch screen while using the GPS software really is a pain in the ***. I would like to mount a 12 - 14 inch tft / lcd touch screen on the dash - so I would ask where would I find one around 12 inch or 14 if i have to. anyone point me in the right direction please.
cheers

I work with a point of service touchscreen company, Radiant Systems, and we use the United States number one manufacturer of touch screens and from looking at their site they dont offer nothing less than 12" as do many major manufactures of touchscreen solutions.
