Motorized vs. Non-motorized

I'm on the fence as to what I want to get. I'm trying to plan ahead, weighing out the pros & cons of both types.

Motorized Screens:
Pros:
* Fits easily in 1-din
* "Hides" away when not in use (added protection from theft)
* Adds about 53 "cool" factor points.
Cons:
* Higher cost
* Gears/motor wear out fast

Non-motorized Screens:
Pros:
* Low cost
* Lasts longer (no gears/motor to wear out)
Cons:
* Always exposed (giant flag that reads "steal me!")
* Requires modifications to fit

I'm sure there's a lot of pros/cons I'm forgetting to mention here, but these are the ones that are constantly on my mind when trying to decide which to buy.

Which type would you buy? Don't forget to post with your reasons!

There is a 3rd option which is a none motorised screen that stows like a motorised one. You pull it out by hand instead of motors doing it for you. All the convenience of motorised without the fail points.

If you mount a non-motorized screen correctly it can look OEM. It will require some work to do that though.

A motorized or stowable screen will always scream 'after market!' to me. If you're worried about a fabbed in monitor attracting theft, you could always make a fake 'Kraco' or 'Realistic' brand looking tape deck mask that you put in place over the monitor when you park.

Hey, business idea...

LOL! Or put a removable decal of a crack on the screen when you leave the car, like the ones that people put on their cars rear windows and such. Or one of those that looks like a baseball or tennisball went throught the glass.

I would go with the motorized screen, provided it seemed like it was a quality product that's not gonna go bad right away. Main reason I would go with it is to save some space.

Or make the screen hide by itself and ad another 106 "cool" factor points. This way you can make the "gears" as strong as you want.

Broadcast Yourself.
You need to upgrade your Flash Player

Best complement that i have gotten with the trunck lit open (you could look directly at the screen area) "you don't have a carpc"

i went with one of these.

non motorised, but retracts into dash with a quick flick and a shove.
this one also has the advantage that is can tilt and pivot so you can get of of glare

when its in

its a cheap and cheerful brand, but the touchscreen works pretty well.
my mate got the motorised version and found it limitating to how much he could move the screen once its out

After having the motors for my 3 different motorized screens get defeated by the Illinois winter, I would NEVER buy another motorized screen. I would say it depends on where you live though.

I too will not get a motorized version again, maybe a pull out. The motorized versions sometimes when it retracts or opens by pushing the button, it will move half way or 1/4 the way etc. and you have to pull the thing all the way out/in with two hands.. yeah that looks cool NOT.

The gears can break if they are plastic, teeth can go missing etc as you mentioned.
