I've always wondered this, are there any software dvd players that would add the left and right bars so 4:3 aspect movies wouldnt look streched. Or do displays have a setting to do this. I just know that a 16:9 movie looks wierd being streched to fit a 4:3, im sure it would be the same wierdness streching 4:3 to 16:9.

16:9 in general usage is pretty useless to be honest but lets face it, it's cool.

If you're planning on watching dvds on it then def use 16:9 otherwise trying to watch 2.35:1 movies is impossible.
Normally the screen will sort out stretching/cutting.
Watching 4:3 movies on a 16:9 screen really isn't too bad - you usually forget and have to try and find a circle like a clock to see if it's stretched or not

If you can afford the extra, I'd recomend widescreen.

Usually the output device(dvd player, xbox) enables you to select 4:3 16:9 or "normal". Right now i don't think there is a point in 16:9 because a 16:9 tv usually cost more than a regular 4:3 so for the same price i buy a bigger 4:3 and get the same veiwing area. But i think you get better resolution.
