Question ULTRA HI-Brightness Mod using LUXEON Leds.

I have some luxeon white leds. Each one generates 180.000mcd (yes 180 thousands) of light!!!!, and it costs less than 15$.
So i had a bright (or stupid.Depends) idea:
Why not replace the CCFT backlight of my LQ10D421 by another using 2 of these leds???
Using a simple calculation:
2 Leds = 360.000 mcd = 360cd
10.4 inch LCD area = 0.214 x 0.164 = 0.035m2

360cd/0.035m2 = 10.285 cd/m2
This is the initial brightness. The light passing through the pannel, will dim. With 90% losses on the pannel etc, the brightness is still 1.000cd/m2!!!!!!!!!!! For a cost of 30$. Not to mention the life of the leds. 100.000 hours.

Now the hard part.
I dont know if is possible. So i ask you guys if anyone had ever tried this kind of mod.
How can i diffuse the light produced by these to illuminate the back of the LCD uniformely?????

For more info on these leds:

i doubt 2 LEDs will be enough to light an entire 10.4 panel. what you will probably have to do is build an array of lights to cover a larger portion of the screen.

then you can use frosted glass/plastic, or even fluorecent light fixture diffuser panels to give you a more even light source for the screen.

this might be fun project to investigate, but i would be willing to bet that the LEDs are going to be too weak to light the entire panel. i cant remember the terms for lighting, but there is basically brightness, and the strength of the light. think of it this way... if you look directly into a LED.... it is bright. but it really doesnt have much power when it comes to lighting up an area....

not trying to bash the idea, but give it a try. and let us know if it works... i would love to boost the brightness of my 8.4 lcd.

You have to see these leds mike.
One normal led, generates from 20-150 mcd. A Brite white led
from 2000-6000 mcd.
The luxeons generates 180.000 mcd (which is the light produced by 40-80 of the brite leds.
I think that is possible. (To be honest i HOPE to be possible).

The only possibility i could think of is to use plexiglass/clear plasic to "dirrect" the light, much like you see on the front of many pc cases, but with leds that bright, I don't know if you'll be able to overcome the cone effect.

You'd probably be better off using many more high-brightness LEDs.

You can buy them from
http://www.markhannahsurplus.com
http://www.theledlight.com

http://www.sander-electronic.de in germany

You must buy some, just to see the amount of light they can bring.
Its unbeliavable. If you check the LXHL-NW98C (with collimator optics), you will se that is brighter than most of the flashlights on the market.

I have also been working on backlight solutions (my LCD panel does not a backlight, as it came from a projection panel). While I have yet to decide on a light source (I am leaning towards white neon tubes like ricers use), I was planning on using a plain old sheet of plain white printer paper for diffusion. You can also go to a video supply or lighting supply shop, and pick up some tough spun (diffusion gel). Much easier to work with than glass or acrylics, as these items can be cut with scissors, and taped in place
