Media Mesh and or OLED.
I was driving past the American Airline Arena when I saw a hugeeeeeeeeeeee screen in the front of it. It was so cool because you would see the building, its transparent. Apperantly it works by having a mesh with LED lights built into. This would be awesome if they made a small one for Car Windows and what not. Maybe even have them embeded into the car body to make the whole car a movie display.

Here is a video of it.

Those type of screens only work when they are in a distance. Up close you will notice the LED's and therefore not very practical for car usage.

That is true, but imaging if they manage to shrink the mesh to smaller scale with smaller LED closer together. I think in the future this will be very very practicle. Imagine having a wall in your house with this mesh. That could be a hella big f%^kin TV, lol. The tech is at ats infancy, so it could get smaller. I emailed them and asked them if there is a version for smaller applications, like cars, lets see what they say.

This is not tech at its infancy...
If you ever been to a concert in the past 30 years, its the same deal. Since you are far away, your eyes blend that light together when it is on. And when it is off you see right through it. The LEDs are just really bright RGB ones (or just 3 or 4 seperate really bright ones more than likely because of the distance and cost).
The "smaller" version of this technology is called an LCD... Every little dot in your LCD is 3 little lights. They are close enough together for the distance that you see a continuous image. And when they are off you can see through them but it is darker since they are so very close together. If you take an LCD apart, you can see the actual part is transparent.
In the stadium the backlight is the rest of the stadium. In an LCD they close it up and put another light source back there.
EDIT: Also all those display screens at stadiums ("the jumbotron") are individual LED based usually too. That is the intermediary size between huge like in the stadium and itty bitty in an LCD. Scrolling marquees, video billboards, all of those are usually this.

I learned something new........... But what I like about the mesh is that it can made to be shaped. Do they have LCDs like that? I would love to have my rear window like that, but still be able to see out of it.

Recently a local inventor stopped by to talk about his OLED patents - his patent relates to OLED screens that are on one side clear and on the other side show an image. So you will be able to have an OLED window or whatever that allows you to see out and an image to be visible to people looking in...
Unfortunately, he is still in the prototype phase and the materials are really expensive - his first prototype will cost over 100K to make and it will not be very large. We hope to have him bring his prototype to a meet up.
He is very interested to know what the use cases would be, aside from defense.
A great example if the University of Washington's OLED contact lens.

You know, I forgot all about OLED. OLED is also bendable so it can easily be applied to glass. This is even better, because maybe a OLED type window tint can be applied to all the Windows.... Imagine one big screen wrapping around from the front to the back, while still being able to roll the windows up and down. I could just kiss you or either curse you, because now you've stuck another idea in my head, lol..... Ask the gentleman if such a thing can be done. Would love a OLED tint for my windows.

OLED tint..interesting - he indicated that the OLED layer is pliable, I do not recall what he said about his patent, if the material is pliable yet, if not, it eventually would be.

Well if it eventually gets into an affordable range I will most def rock that tint..... I really think he could make it big time. Alot of people that are into advertising would jump all over this. We have Sizzle Weekend down on South Beach every year and all the Hip Hop artists and would be Hip Hop artists come down in their super tricked out cars with billboard graphics all over the car. If they found a window tint that can display video, forget it, that guy would be rich out his a$$ for coming up with it. I'll gladly be his test subject

Well I know they have have flexible OLED for a long time now. I think it was shown to the public as "rollable screens" or something. So it should be flexible.
They basically print the pattern like your desktop printer would onto PET. Although obviously much more complex and accurate!
A downside though is that OLEDs typically burn out really fast in comparison to regular LEDs.

True - but this is actively being addressed and as far as I have been told, we will see a lot of improvements in the near future. We were told it is due to environmental factors that they burn out - however with new enclosures that are transparent they are protected in a vacuum and have a far longer lifetime.
Maybe we should get him to come back and do a video...

Found this, seems interesting also.... Looks like the tail lights are non existent and instead it uses OLED, among other parts also.
