Transflective Lillyput - Touchscreen trouble

I have one of the very early Lillyput transflective screens (Jan. 2006), bought one when they were just released. The screen works great, but the touch continues to be flakey. Even the slightest pressure on the front of the case makes the mouse jump around erratically.

The early versions were known to have this issue. I sorta fixed it by running a wire along the sides of the touch panel, to act as a spacer. This worked a bit but not reliably.

The only remaining option I can think of is to cut a little bit off the touch panel so none of the sensitive area can get in contact with the case anymore. Has anyone ever done this before? Can this be done or will this ruin the touch panel? It's a 4-wire resistive type. Hints and tips are welcome...

As yet another alternative, would the components of this monitor fit inside a double-din conversion frame?

Thanks
