Lightbulb Laptop LCD Idea ... extending the interface cable

Hi all,

This is my first post here but I have had an MP3 setup in my 4x4 for a year now.

I am looking to improve my setup and I have an old PII Laptop complete to help me out.

Firstly I was thinking would it be easy just to separate the screen and the base of the laptop for more ergonomic mounting.

I could then recess the screen into the dash and have the keyboard and base on mounted into the console.

I have serviced IBM laptops for many years and thought I wonder if you could just build an extension cable for the two cables between the screen and the mainboard.

Any thoughts on this ? Anyone tried it, I was thinking making the cable 1m long would be all I am after.

Cheers all

Hmm, I don't think over 1m long would be possible... I tried something similar, and got timing problems due to propogation delay... basicly, it looked crap: Juddery lines, random flashes, you get the picture (no pun intended).

Btw, my setup had a roughly 1m hirose cable between my lcd controller and lcd, just incase your wondering.

the question is, are YOU being stupid, his reply made perfect sense

The short answer is it will be very difficult to build an extension for the cables, and it probably won't work properly when you are done

Neither, actually. I'm not even sure why you would think that - please explain why you think this?

Well, where shall I start. What I described in my previous post was very similar to what you described in you first post. Ok, here you go. Lamens terms: I've tried what you said in your post. It worked, but not very well. If you don't believe me, you can always try to build it yourself like I did. It takes quite a while, and you need to have good patience and soldering skills.

Frodo: Thanx. I`m glad some people can understand these things.

For real... Go ahead and try it -- you'll see.. It will be really whack and you will be ****ed you wasted that much time on it..

MANY people have done this.. why don't you try searching first - you might just found tons of people who've wasted their time as well..

VGA shielded cabling might get you a little further.. wrap some aluminum foil around it and KEEP IT AWAY FROM POWER wires and you might have a shot..

Your answer was fine...it was just above RaginRover's experience level.

I made a 1 foot (.3m) extension for my 'laptop' screen, it worked fine, my only difficulty was the fact it used non standard connectors (well unavailable anyway) so I had to make a bunch of precise solder connections.

Two are bad...one bad one produces wavy lines in the lower half of the screen, the other causes the screen to go blank.

Proceed at your own risk, but if you can get an LCD that will use more standard connectors...and you can buy an extension cable...you may do better.

um...the very first reply post answered his question pretty clearly.

Mikehunt tried to help because, if you read the original post, it says at the very bottom "Any thoughts on this ?"

what are you talking about? he directly asked people's opinion, if you didnt expect a responce, why the hell ask?!

Seems pretty clear to me, he has an mp3 setup in his car for the past year, but recently found/decided to post.

This is my favorite:

Why is he right to be annoyed?! He directly asked a question, got a perfectly CLEAR responce, and still had the nerve to get all cocky about it. then disappears. and you magically appear.

Relax man, Im not here to upset anyone, well apart from one guy anyway. I can asure you hes not me.

Being an engineer myself, compaq to be precise. I do have access to parts and have the oppurtunity to play around with them.

I too have tried extending the cable to about 1m just to find the quality deteriorates. Sure I already knew this will happen and so would an experienced engineer. I did it purely to see how far Ill get away with it.

I said hes got the right to be annoyed cause hes is ovbiously stupid and wanted some first class respose. What MikeHunt79 wrote was more than 100% correct. Ill write exactly the same thing to RaginRover. I know, been through, felt the pain but I just happen not be there at the time to help.

Sure we all wondered why he said what he said and wondered what sort of answer he expected. Yes hes gone, I wondered why that is too, out of embarassment maybe?

You must have noticed my original post was contradictory and stupid thats beacause I was just taking the ****.

And I do appreciate all the effort you guys put in to help each other out.

Erm, don't mean to be pedantic, but no you didn't. You said he's right to be annoyed. That is a very different thing to he's got the right to be annoyed.

The former says you agree with him, the latter says you appreciate the fact that he might be, and respect that.

Someone obviously got very upset with the first few words. Maybe it had to do with the 3rd answer I made, I understand why sorry wont say no more.

But hey read the rest of the post and youll understand what its all about. I obviously dont support him and no one does either.
