Character lcd visibility comparison?

Im going to buy a usb character lcd to use on my carputer system that im building. It will be used in tandem with the 5.6" color lcd that I have. The character lcd will be mounted on the dashboard, either in the center over the vents, or between the C pillar and the "hump" of the guage cluster. Char lcd will be purely for song title and time, etc.

I need the char lcd to be VERY visible at all times, in the sun and in the dark, and readable for track titles etc. Ill be driving my car and using the system at all times of the day.

Ive been looking at the CrystalFontz 634 USB LCD 20x4 (CFA634-TFB-KU) which is $70USD.

Its the very bottom LCD on this page.

Ive heard transflective lcds are the best for day and night, but is this true in reality? Would I be better off getting an lcd and inverting it?

Does anyone have this lcd and any pics of it? That would be awsome.

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure about this, but it seems a lot of peeps here don't seem to be using char LCD's anymore. There were more people here that were when I first joined, but I think a lot them have either gone over to TFT's or don`t post here anymore.

Try searching the older posts.

Also, there a fair few other people using char LCD's now. For example: Overclockers put char LCD's in their computers case, so they can see the temperate of the CPU and whatnot. Try asking/searching at www.hardforums.com or similar, I'm sure you'll get some feedback.

I've never sen inverted displays myself, I'm sure they do the trick. I've heard EL backlit displays r the best. Try digging some info up about them. Look for VFD's also.

Hmmm good point, I totally forgot about the trend of using them for computers :P

Time for my first visit to {h} since I got Bannited

I thought of VFDs but theyd be more of a pain to mount I think, plus I need USB and I dont think USB VFDs exist and I dont want to spend even MORE money for a usb>serial converter.

you want a answer? I dont have this lcd and no pics. I got a "reversed" lcd, black with green/yellow text, and that is the combination that is most easily-read for the eye, scientificly proven.
