Don't know what to do about the Screen now.
The Vibrant is upto £62, and the Datalux in the states is upto rough £68 (approx exchange), the Vibrant doesn't have touch, and the guy wants cheque or Postal order.
The Datalux has touch but is probably faded by now, and may have problems with the Nemiah Epai I've ordered, and the shipping will be higher, but at least he will take paypal.

Update. the current box ain't dead, so that is going into my Desktop PC. Give the BP6 a rest then build it into a project box.
The Nehmiah arrived at the office this morning. All bits present and correct. LinITX delivered niceley and on time. Have everything I need except a beefy HDD, and a touchscreen monitor, but the Ebay watches are on all the decent Datalux ones.
Just need to get the box for it all now. Local Maplin near office doesn't have them, but one near home (on a pay to use carpark) does. Need a PC26 box to get a normal CDROM on board.

My budget aint big. Far from it. But if you don't realistically price thing up, you are not going to find an '8.4" with touch, 800x600, fully fitted to your dash for free, and tea and biscuits thrown for £100' are you.
I would love to pay less, and not bend the CC's but needs must, and if I want to try and put together a specialist PC that I can assemble to customer needs (I hope to be able to sell to geeks to busy to assemble their own, or business men who must have the latest thing in their cars), and put it into package that the average Ice installer can deal with. maybe even do the installing myself.

You have a point......im just being a tight arse.....
I think im going for x****c model screen, dave is gonna charge 45 for shipping but it has everything i want, id ideally like a 10.4 with 800*600 but the dscustom screens are probably the best way forward.
Plus dave is such a nice guy....id prefer him to have my hard earned $$$
Im getting all confused with OS's choice now.....dash pc looks so cool that i might try that but oh god how scared i am about messing with Linux. Win98 lite with media engine would be ace as well...
So what im gonna do is this....
Im gonna load on a boot manager know as Bootit NG i recommend this program it is the dogs, and have win98 lite, linux and maybe XP but i think XP would be ridiculous on a project like this.
And see which one is best......

Falken,
I am very tempted by that 7" touchscreen! I am in "acquiring" mode for my carputer, which will eventually go in my Ford Anglia 105E, so it may be a few months before I go for a screen...but i shall put that in my "wishlist" and start saving my pennies

The brightness issue can be delt with fairly easily as the LCD panel can be dismantled with relative ease, making it possible to replace the ccfl, I usually use tubes from scanners where the CCD has failed but the lamp is still good, the brightness picks up really nicely. also the stand that these monitors are built on really can lend its self to some custom mountings. The panels them selves are pretty clear and don't tend to blur (have to remember they are quite old monitors by todays standards) I can watch divx, play mp3s, follow maps etc with out any problems, just need to find a touch screen kit that will fit it for as little money as possible.
Oh I should probably mention its running from a PIII 650 laptop (its display is busted but the vga output is still good) with no more than 4mb graphics memory.
Just out of interest has any one from the uk ordered from DigitalWW, i need to know if uk customs tend to catch stuff coming in to the uk from them and add their cut to the price.

Linux is only scary when you don't use it. There are internet primers, and news groups and loads of good books. Almost everything is configurable using text files (quite often XML these days for newish apps). The inbuilt MAN manual docs sytem is excellent.
And modern Distros like Suse, Redhat, and my Favorite Mandrake are absolutley excellent. All three use the RPM package management system.
If a package of an app for your system isn't available, you can either build one from a source tarball, or build and install the sources your self. As long as you have all the dependencies (bit like when a VB app needs runtimes), then you usually just have to type
./configure
make
make install
Then the default options will normally install it into the right place.

Slimmed down XP isn't so ridiculous. I'm using 2K, and XP is even more flexible. Multiboot is fine. A good idea, while you learn. But Linux includes both the GRUB and LILO boot managers anyway, that with some text file editing can boot any OS from any Bootable HDD in your system.

Dead right. K58H is the only one I would touch for a half decent system. Glad you got the backlight sorted. Nice thing to know for future projects.
I just wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting into with a K55/57 monitor.

Just a Quick update. The 12.1" touch screen kit turned up today from digitalww (cheers for dealing with the shipping instructions, customs didn't get me this time ) and has been installed. I'm very impressed with it, and it works really nicely. Just need to pick up a dlink radio and a usb hub now and the setup will be just about complete.

Got my 10.4" touch panel too. Looks like mine sneaked under the wire as well.
Just as a matter of interest, which way round do you install the panel, or doesn't it matter?
