I am looking for any info on "head up" displays

I have tried to do some development myself. I bought the LCD projection panel with SVGA resolution and placed it horizontally under the windshield. The image reflects from the windshield it is bright and clear except one stupid thing: it reflects twice from the outer layer of the windshield and from the inner layer as a result I see image twice shifter by ~6 mm. It is annoying.

I know, that for the airplanes they spray a thin layer of gold or silver on the glass. This layer reflects most of the light.

I am thinking to buy a "mirror tinting film" and place a 12x10" patch on the inner side of the windshield. This should reflect most of the light so I will see only one image. Another thing: LCD polarizes the light. If I can make my windshield polarize the light, I will see only one reflection from the inner side.

Anybody else has ideas on the head up display.

I read somewhere last year that the organic flexible LCDs will be coming very soon. I'm looking into that for my HUD project. The LCD displays are thin and flexible, so I'm thinking "why not mount one of those to a windshield?!" Theoretically, it could work, but I won't know until I see the technology released.

I know it's for gauges, but it has a USB interface. Maybe it can be hacked up :P

I have took apart my projection pannel and I can take out the transparent LCD panel. The only two issues:

1. it still has metal frame (~ 1cm wide).

2. people can see the image from outside.

Well the panels of today still have thickness to them. The new stuff coming down the pipe won't need that framework. It relies on an ultra-thin layer of flexible transistors to provide the image. From what I've read, you will be able to roll it up and take it around with you, like an e-paper.

Hi
I contacted holosport and got the following answer:

We currently plan on having the basic HoloSport( HUD ready for general
availability around January. It will be priced comparable to conventional
gauges at MSRP of $486. We are working on getting distributors up and
running. The basic system comes with Tachometer, Vacuum/Boost, Oil or Water
Temperature, Oil Pressure, and Volts. Also included is a programmable shift
light, a NOS arming and activation light. All of these functions can be
viewed at the same time or each separately.

Additional expansion cards w/ senders (included) will be available for $80
to $125 MSRP depending on the function. These include functions such as
speed, exhaust gas temp, air/fuel ratio, stereo amplifier temp, and NOS
level. There is a limit as to how many of these can be added because the
display gets crowded.

The dash unit measures 7"x7"x1-1/4" and we supply all the necessary senders
for universal installation. For the individual that wants to mount it flush
under the dash we have an under dash mounting system available. This of
course requires cutting a hole in the dash.

The image displays directly on the windshield but you need to apply our
clear proprietary film (supplied) for the best results. This is to eliminate
the distracting double image you often see when something is reflected off
of the dash onto the windshield. We condition the optical properties so that
you get a nice single crisp image of the display. We also have an optional
Tombstone display much like the fighter pilots have in their aircraft. These
are available for an additional $127.50 MSRP.

The unit will be available in three-color choices; green, red/orange, and
blue. It turns out that due to availability the only color available
initially will be the red/orange. We are having the web site updated to
reflect this. We have also designed and patented the system to work in
daylight. There are two settings because the light required for daylight
operation is to bright for nighttime use.

I hope this was informative and thanks for considering the HoloSport(
product.

Only US$ 486,well I think that I will try to make something myself or if I win the lotto buy the one from ebay:
