Regulate Power to LCD?

Do I need to regulate the power to my LCD? And if so, if there a piece of hardware somewhere that you recommend to do this?

I will be using a Xenarc touchscreen with a PIII laptop.

thanks in advance,
.brit

I had originally planned on running a 12V source into the laptop, but I just checked the specs on the AC adapter for the laptop and it outputs 18V.

How do I get 18V from a 12V source without using a AC/DC converter?

Also, what do I use to regulate the power to the LCD?

thanks,
.brit

Use a cigarette lighter multivoltage Laptop adaptor which replaces the mains brick you normally plug into you laptop. If you want to install it permanatly then just unsolder the wire going to the lighter plug tip (12V+ positive) and surround (earth) and wire them into 12V+ and earth source in you car. I say only the tip and surround as most 12v -> 16/17/18/19V laptop adaptors have the electronics in the lighter plug

I run my Xenarc screen unregulated, but I get tiny white flashes all over the screen when I do so. I working on a better solution right now.

I am using two regulated psu's from Maplins, a 12v>15/16/17/18/19v adjustable for the laptop (£20) and a 12v for my Lilliput (£10). I checked both of these using a meter and putting the car under different loads see if voltage moved up/down too far, both were minimal. Both have been installed for over 6 weeks now with no problems. Both are using the original cig lighter ends, i have used female cig lighter sockets (£1 Maplins) to connect to battery and ignition lines. The screen psu switches on/off with the ignition key.

FYI the laptop psu has been left connected overnight sometimes with the laptop still running and car has started no problems. Makes me wonder if it is worth going the 12v/240v invertor route to install a full tower PC as the laptop was only supposed to be a temp measure!!

doesn't the xenarc come with a cig adapter to power it? that regulates the voltage right? just chop it up and hard wire it into another source.

Lilliput should have come with one but these but they were missing when shipped. You could cut off the plug as long as you fuse it (fuse is in the cig plug)
