Perfect 8" widescreen LCD?
Hey all,
I've been planning on putting a CarPC in my 2003 WRX Wagon, with a LCD in the double-din, for MP3/Navigation.
I've been doing research on what type of an LCD might be the best for my application, and I've been picky about what I want - widescreen, high resolution (800x480 or 800x600), high brightness, and preferably a VGA or LVDS interface.
Most of the screens I looked at were either too big (8.4"+), too small, (~6"), were too low of a resolution (640x480), or were video-only (not VGA/LVDS).
I didn't want to have to take a Xenarc or a Liliput and tear it apart to get the bare LCD and parts, and I didn't want to have to get a kit (like DWW's).
I found this 7" LCD from Toppoly:
http://www.toppoly.com/toppoly/Product/TD070WGCB1.asp
Features:
- Wide VGA resolution (854x480)
- Supports NTSC/PAL/SECAM TV and VGA standard (possibly LVDS?)
- Supports picture rotation in U/D and L/R directions
- High brightness (420 cd/m2)
More details:
http://www.toppoly.com/Toppoly/tw/Pr...TD070WGCB1.asp
http://www.toppoly.com/toppoly/Produ...TD070WGCB1.asp
(PDF) http://www.toppoly.com/Toppoly/Suppo...inch_Final.pdf
The System Block Diagram link above (1st of 3) seems to indicate that the LCD might have a LVDS interface.
The company's web site indicates that sample quantities are available, and production is set for right around now.
I have no idea how much they're asking, or whether they'll sell, but the specs look highly interesting.
Any thoughts?

That LCD looks nice.
I'd buy it if the price is right.

Manufacturer in Taiwan
I sent an e-mail to a sales person at the company, which is in Taiwan.
I'll see what they say about sales, pricing, and any technical specifications, if any.
Since it's a new product, they may be working on getting US distributors, so that may be an option.
Most of the other 7" widescreen LCD's I've seen have a much lower resolution, listed as 1440x230, but in reality it's physically 480x230.. way too low.
We'll see, I'll keep things updated here.

http://www.lcdinline.com/products/tftlcd.htm
I sent them an e-mail inquiry about sample quantity availability..

The fact that this is a fairly new model of LCD (production set for Q1-2004, or around now), it may be some time before LCD distributors will carry it, and hence, a lack of posted prices.
I'm waiting on replies from Toppoly themselves, and LCDInline, mentioned earlier.

Also, a LCD from Sharp with similar specs:
LQ070Y5DG02
7" diagonal
800 x RGB x 480 dot format
0.195 x 0.174 pixel pitch
156.0 x 83.3 viewable area
6-bit digital RGB input system (lvds, 18-bit?)
6-bit digital (lvds, 18-bit?)
1 CCFT backlight
380 NITS / cdm/2
4700 milliwatts consumption (4.7 watts?)
193.3 x 116.5 x 8.8 overall dimensions (mm)
From spec sheet:
http://sharp-world.com/products/devi...table/006.html
I believe this is also a relatively new model as well.
Edit again:
This place lists the LCD's, but they won't sell to individuals:
http://www.solar-technologies.com/re...p?part_id=4091
If you go to to request info, they have:
"Regrettably, we cannot support small quantity inquiries from INDIVIDUAL users for personal use."

I sent an e-mail to Earth LCD inquiring about availability and pricing.
I have no idea on pricing as of yet, but my guess would be in the several hundred-dollar range ($300-500).
Anyhow, that's only a guess.

Nice, I'm hoping some other alternatives to the Xenarc and Lilliputs will come out soon.

Keep in mind, these are bare LCD's, not packaged LCD's like the Xenarcs or Liliputs..
"Some Assembly Required" is the phrase.
May or may not come with controller cards, inverters, power supply or cables...

LVDS / CMOS Interfaces...
This post is primarily for my own reference, but thought others might find it interesting.
I've been looking for an LCD with an LVDS interface, so I can hook it up directly to a board like this, which has a LVDS transmitter.
http://www.commell-sys.com/Product/SBC/LV-671.HTM
Problem is, the Hitachi 8" ones above are CMOS interface, not LVDS.
Normally, this requires an expensive LVDS receiver.. but all it really is is a single chip, like this:
http://www.national.com/ds/DS/DS90CF561.pdf
The application diagram on the first page is interesting, but the rest is mostly technical.
Edit: The receiver chip is self-contained, no external support chips required, and is Only $7 for one.
References:
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksea...D%2DND&site=us
http://www.national.com/pf/DS/DS90CF364A.html
Now, I have some electronics engineering experience, so I figure it probably wouldn't be too hard to design a small LVDS receiver module for CMOS LCD's like this.
And with PCB production services like this, it wouldn't be too expensive:
http://www.expresspcb.com/ExpressPCB...sMiniboard.htm
The boards themselves would probably be only around $20, and with the parts, maybe $40-50.
Just some random thoughts.
