You cant say VGA vs Typical LCD... the issue really is VGA vs NTSC/PAL. VGA, XGA in most of the LCDs mentioned on this site supports a maximum resolution of 1024x768 and can take a signal directly from a computer's VGA out.

NTSC/PAL LCDs have a maximum resolution of 640x480(at best). Also it requires your computer to either have a composite out or S-video out. S-video out is common on alot of mini-ITX boards. However s-video can sometimes leave something to be desired. Image quality is also not usually as good on these.

The biggest issue is the resoultion though, the higher the resolution the more information(albiet smaller) you can display at one time. This becomes and issue when using GPS software that has lots of buttons and readouts.

For the two links you gave me the more expensive VGA one would be the way to go if you MUST have single DIN. However as im sure youve noticed most people go for modding a 7" widescreen to fit in a 2DIN slot.

Yes a touchscreen acts just like a mouse in essense.

maeveth, thanks for the response. As for your advice about using a 7" widescreen, i have an RX-8 and i dont want to get rid of my stock unit. I am actually getting a custom enclosure made that would accomodate a 1din unit.

if you have seen the interior of an rx8 its not that easy to just stick a 2din unit in there.

The best option would be to check out the Lilliput 7" VGA LCD group buys in the for sale forum, and this: http://www.digitalww.com/indashhousing.htm

As far as I have seen all the 7in vga screens have a 800x480 resolution and scale inputs up to 1024x768 down to 800x480. Also all the 7in screens that only take RCA I have seen have a resolution of 400x240.

well i decided that buying the stock navi screen for the rx8 would be too expensive.. instead i am awaiting a custom 1din dash pieace that wud fit in the navi section... i wish i could just get the flip up portioni of the navi and put my own screen in there.

Just tap into the stock navi screen. I know it works its just a RGBS LCD.
