Kiosk Touch Screen

Does anyone know what would be involved in using a different motherboard or video card on the screen of this unit?

You need to read this thread http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/classified-archive/21424-found-someting-interesting-e-bay.html all 657 messages in it!

In short you could add a PCI graphics card, I guess, but not to use with the built in screen. You could also put a different MB in but not hook it up to the screen as the controller is built in to the supplied MB.

The good news... you can upgrade to a 1.4GHz Celeron... happy reading!

Chris.

instead of a 12 inch 800*600 at 225$ + shipping, why not a 10.5 inch 1024*768 at 150$ + shipping??

I've considered both and the ebay one is much better.

"much better" is a big word.

yes, it has more ports, better RAM/CPU/HDD and fits PCI components, but it has a lower resolution which you get stuck with and is way bigger. I really mean it is huge compared to the one from civicduties.

paying less for a smaller form factor... sounds like a great deal to me.

Faster out of the box, higher upgrade ceiling (if the other is upgradable at all ,) no external PSU required, FAR better customer service from the seller, MUCH more documentation available. I can come up with more if you want.

Do you have anything other than resolution? (A dubious advantage as it makes accurate touchscreen use far more difficult.) The size is not a concern for me, as it is used as a home theater component.

" Display is more than 1024X768 " is a strange expression. I would suspect it is compressed. If it is real XGA, it will be better for a carputer, although 12" one may be more attractive for in house use for its better upgradability. could you comfirm it is TFT XGA?

XGA is the display standard for 1024*768 and the unit from that thread is doing it good.

If you go higher resolution, you're into a "virtual screen" and it is kinda ennoying.

this said, the screen is crisp at that resolution.
Other owners of those units are looking at upgrading it, the CPU is not soldered, nor memory or HDD. You have PCMCIA and USB1.1 onboard - you can then make whatever you want.

the other one, bigger screen but lower res. You're stuck with that res even if you upgrade everything else.
