Silly questions

I'm a research assistant in a university driving simulator lab. We're looking into getting a new 8" LCD touch screen monitor for our vehicle, and so far it looks like the Lilliput might be a good option. All we really need is a touch screen monitor with usb. I've read that the Lilliput comes with a pencil/pen thing for it. Is this required for its use (or can a driver use their fingers)?

What do you think?

Also, being inexperienced in such things, I'm still learning all the techinal jargon. What does VGA refer to / stand for?

Thanks.

You can just use your fingers in most cases, unless you are trying to do sensitive work, i.e. click on something small.

Yeah, the pencil/pen thing is just a plastic point like you find with handheld PDA's. It's not a technical requirement. If you need careful pointing you can use any blunt plastic pointer such as a retracted ballpoint pen.

VGA (Video Graphics Array) is the standard that just about any personal computer you could find today uses for video display. In usage around here it means "Sharp enough to read text" compared to a television LCD monitor that's fuzzy and can't be connected directly to a computer without an interface called a scan converter.

The monitor on your desktop computer is a VGA monitor.VGA is what you want.

Tell us about the research project!

The driving sim is basically a Saturn with 3 large screens around the front end, each with a projector. The car has its controls (steering, acc, etc.) all hooked up to a host computer so the driver can drive through worlds created on driving sim software. Like a giant video game.

The study we're planning currently is a collision warning device study, where just before the driver hits the person in front of them the cwd (on the monitor I'm researching) alerts the driver to their impending doom. We've done studies using a touch screen before, but we don't have that one anymore.

So... is Lilliput the way to go, or how about this Starvision 7" I've been reading about on ebay (see previous threads)?

If what you need is a 7" VGA touchscreen then Lilliput will work fine for you.

However from your description, I cant really see where you are going to put the lilliput. Is it the 3 large screens? How is a touchscreen going to help in the sim? Will the driver be clicking on the screens before the collision?

well what i see... hmmm the alert would be about point less as i see it. by the time you hear the alarm and react to it BOOOM. how does the alarm work? speed and lasers? what purpose would this be for, except for the fact you get to drive in the sim. hehe or is this one of the beginning of brain food and perhaps to further indepth and complex creations. would the lilliput be much like the screens that come standard in newer cars? the device you are working on would just be an add on?

I'd suggest looking at the xenarc. The lilliputs are refurbished panels and have this deal where the video will go out and a 'jurrasic park' image will display for a bit. this usually happens during boot up.

I mean I use the lilliput and i like it. But for a setting like this I'd recommend the xenarc as you're more concerned with quality and price is probably less of an issue since you're working with a university. The xenarcs are about $500 compared to the $350 of the lilliput.

You may also want to try to sell them on a 12"-15" screen. I'm assuming this will be used to help the driver configure the sim, select the course, etc? The 7" screens can be a little hard to see if the app you're using wasn't written for it. using windows sucks on it cause everything's so small.

sounds like an interesting project tho
