Yes, you can do it.
However, it's a little flaky. You can only do it at cetain resolutions and refresh rates. The adjustments available for centering the picture never seem to really get both pictures where you want them before one of the two "turn themselves off" for whatever reason. Maybe it's just because I'm using an LCD screen (which I know acts a little goofy in multiple monitor situations) but this has been my experience with running TV out and the computer monitor at the same time.
