Red face Starvision Owners...

You guys having any issues with your LCDs?

I have the SP-7VGAT, and I have a couple of issues/gripes. I've sent an email to tech@starvision.us, but no one responded. I then forwarded it to Chris and let him know no one responded, but then he hasn't responded.. *sigh*

He seemed VERY helpful and willing to sell this LCD to me, but now that I have some questions/issues, no one cares.. ?!?!?

My issues/gripes:

1. Not bright enough, but nothing I can do about it.

2. Lower-Right corner of LCD where cables stick out keeps coming apart slightly. Not a big deal, but annoying. The screw in the back apparently does NOTHING.. *shrug*

3. Brightness, Contrast, and other controls don't save settings after I turn it off. I disabled "Auto-Adjust" but still they go back to defaults, which actually are REALLY close to my ideal settings, but not quite.

4. No auto-on, but I believe if I wire up my PC's "boot signal" wire from the ITPS to the power pulse wire on the LCD, then it will turn them both on at the same time, and then off at the same time. Perfect.

5. The only two remote buttons that do anything are POWER and VIDEO SELECT. Nothing else works (mode select, mirror, menu, >, <, dimmer).. WTF!

Other than that, I'm happy..

Still haven't messed with the touchscreen (battling WinXP USB 2.0 driver legal issues, might need to run a different OS, *sigh*).. That better not give me any problems!!

The Starvision is a piece of **** any way you look at it (and I've been looking at it in a lot of ways). If the post for the KarPC Xenarc group buy had come along a week earlier I would have been a much happy man.

First, I will address the points raised by sq_geek:

I haven't emailed starvision.us yet, but I have sent an email to sales@thediscounthound.com and also have received no response. That may just be their PayPal account that they never check so I won't count this against them.

Yeah, my brightness isn't that high either. I think that touchscreen they installed is killing most of it. Also, the brightness changes significantly depending on even the slightest change in vertical viewing angle. I haven't installed it in my car yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be viewing the screen at an angle where the brightness is highest.

Mine didn't seem to have this problem before I openend it up. When I mount the display back in the case, I will double-check.

Again, I don't seem to have this problem. I changes brightness and contrast settings, unplugged the display for a few hours, then plugged it back in and they were all the way I left them. This is strange... I wonder if we have different versions of the microcontroller code... BTW, I opened up my case so i can see all of the chips being used. They are using a Novatek NT68320F LCD controller and a Novatek NT68F632 microcontroller on mine.

That's a good idea. I'll give that a try when I actually start installing things.

Yup, like Armen said in the other thread I mentioned, these guys just took the TView display and the remote and repackaged it.

I wish I could say the same (mine came with two dead pixels). But, I supposed things could have been much worse. The display itself is not so bad.

I had no problems at all getting the touchscreen to work. However, since I already voided the warranty by opening up the case, I thing I'm going to try flipping it upside down to fix that annoying green bar that runs along the left side of the display. Can you believe that they installed it UPSIDE-DOWN!!!???
What were they thinking...that we would not notice the blatant discoloration of a 5 pixel wide band running along the entire edge of the screen!!?? Wish me luck...

Oh, one other issue I wanted to bring up was that I still haven't been able to get the damn thing to switch into the 800x480 native resolution. I've tried various PowerStrip settings and X-Windows modelines but none of them work right. The closest I've gotten was using a 856x480 modline that almost works. It recognizes it as 840x480 and there are very little scaling artifacts. I guess I'll have to try that EPIA-M Bios patch that was posting on this forum (once I get my EPIA-M board).

I think we need to start a Starvision support group for those of us "early adopters" that got screwed with this thing. For some reason, I never seem to learn my lesson about not jumping on things without doing the proper research. But, then again, where's the fun in that?

EDIT: My Starvision display and touchscreen

Aargh.. Ok, so the touch screen works flawlessly. No driver issues at all..

BUT...

Like someone else mentioned, its upside down and thus mis-aligned....

So I can't go all of the way over to the left or top..

*SIGH*

Is this fixable????

I'm scared to go opening it up....

It is fixable but you have to be VERY, VERY careful or the touchscreen will crack (like mine). I think the best way is to get some kind of thin metal wire and slip it in between the TS and the LCD and slowly pull it back and forth until it separates. Then just flip it over, glue it back on, and redo the calibration.

I suggest you use a heat gun in conjunction with a thin wire or something of the sort AND a lot ot TLC. I'm sure it can be done with care. This is what I have done when PRYING the LCD display out of my cell phones when changing cases. Good luck and TTYL!

for you guys that have opened the starvision, the wires come off the bottom of the casing, because of this, the display doesn't fit in my OEM LCD location. if i pull open the case, is there enough slack to move the wires so they come off the side if i cut the case?

Yes, there's a lot of room for moving the wires. Also, the wires are connected to circuit boards that are themselves free to move.

Well fuggin StarVision NEVER emailed me back... Neither of my two emails were replied to. I guess it's time to spam the heck out of them and flood them with emails until they reply..

Maybe I should send them a link to show them how powerful the mp3car.com forums can be, with regard to a company's reputation?

I'm still quite happy with my LCD.. don't get me wrong, but it ****es me off when someone blatantly ignores me -- twice, esp. when I have some obvious issues, as mentioned above...

yeah, but if you dont get a response on the phone, you should post the email addresses here and we can all email them and tell them we do not appreciate when they mis-treat our fellow mp3car members

Chris emailed me back and asked me to call him. I did, but I don't have the LCD in front of me right now, so he asked me to call back when I do. This must mean at leaste one of my issues is resolvable, or he wants to see if it is broken. My issues:

1. When I'm using the OSD menu to adjust the brightness, contrast, etc, it doesn't seem to save after I power the unit off and then back on. How do I save this? I noticed there was an option for "Auto Adjust" but I made sure that was set to "NO". How do I save the settings after I tweak them?

2. Is there a way to auto-turn-on the unit? I'm sure I could hook up a relay so that it applies a pulse to the power switch's + wire, but I'd have to open the unit up and I'm sure that would void my warranty. Any ideas?

3. It seems that the touchscreen was installed improperly. It's not quite aligned properly, and I can't use the feature on the left-hand edge of the screen. It's moved over too far.

So we'll see.. I'll post an update when I talk to him again.

the unit still doesn't quite fit... its about 1/4" too tall. i had read the dimensions were the same as the xenarc which i know fits, so i guess that's not quite accurate (or the guy who said the xenarc fits in the plastic display pod im using left out some info).

lets see:
starvision:
http://www.starvision.us/product.php?SP-7VGAT
Dimensions: 7.75" (W) X 4.75" (H) X 1.38" (D)

from xenarc:
http://www.xenarc.com/product/700ts.html
Dimension (in): 7.75W x 4.75H x 1.38D

huh!!! let me go actually measure the pixelon with a measure....
6 7/8" x 5 1/4" x 1 1/8"

i think someone at starvision has a problem with measurements. if it was truly 4.75" it would have fit fine in my pod.
