Little LCDs for Big LCD prices, why?

I have been lurking around for some time and honestly I am having a hard time stomaching the little LCD prices when good 15" panels can be had for $300. Of course a touch panel kit would need to be purchased, but this is crazy. Can anyone explain the logic for the higher prices?

Has anyone taken a larger traditional LCD panel for car computer usage?

thanks,

Carl B

Consider how small our hobby is...there are 1,000's of 15" lcd's made for every 7" widescreen. You just cant match the demand to make the slight profit worthwhile.

That, and technology-wise, it is easier to make things larger rather than smaller. On a 5.8 inch screen, you have less than 1/10th of the available real-estate to put all of the controller and power equipment (as compared to a 15" screen). It also has to be more shock resistant, and have different features....

Good points. So what about getting a replacement panel for a laptop with a relevant LCD controller? maybe something like from a panasonic toughbook?

Just a thought...

It would work, assuming you can get all the parts. But, consider how cumbersome the screen would be (can you think of any place to put 15"s of screen?)

Controllers for those lcd's are not cheap either. Keep in mind that while the lcd may be only $50 on eBay, the controller may be upwards of $150+ plus if you decide on a touchscreen even more. If you want a large screen, there are people that have done it, but they are very out of place looking, and take up a huge amoun tof room. Ticket waiting to happen! Look at the projects, do a search for the neon with a point of sale computer in it. You will see what I mean..its HUGE!

Honestly I was looking for 10.4" or 12" LCD panels. For me ultimately, I would be mounting the display in an overhead console in my Jeep, that would be secured with some serious steel to prevent theft by only the most determined crooks... or so I hope anyway. most 10" panels are just over 6.5" tall it would be just above my mirror.
