Is it easy to run a lilliput and TFT from same computer?
After my first sucessfull attempt at a carputer (IMO), i want to take mine to the next level...
I am just starting to modify my original dash, with loads of fibreglass...so i thought i'd take the opertunity to make some drastic changes...
The plan is to have my lilliput 7" for myself (Driver), and use a 15" TFT for the other half...
Ideally i would want to get rid of the cars dials (well hide them, as its illegall in the UK to remove them), and use my lilliput to show MPG, RPM, Fuel, etc...
On the other 15" TFT, i would want to show movies, music vids, etc...
Has anyone done the above or could you give me any pointers...
Thanks
Daz

He wants to display different things on the two monitors though, so a VGA splitter wouldn't work.
You'd have to have either a dual-monitor capable video card, or two separate video cards to do that.

even with those 2 its going to be tricky. Id say get a low end epia boad for your dash display just to tie in with OBD2 and a more powerful one for yr 15" screen. It aint easy to output two different screens from one PC.

Its not too hard at all, with my nvidia mx 440 I can display a movie on a TV and do normal stuff on the main screen (even control the movie on the TV) however you connot use windows media player, as clicking the mouse would take it out of fullscreen mode. With the new graffics cards comming with two DVI ports or One DVI and one VGA which both are capable of using two monitors, some even three with an added s-video (but im not sure if one is shared?) So software will probably start comming out making it alot easier to use multiple screens.
The only problem is mini-itx boards only have a single PCI port, in the future, hopefully, this will become a 16x PCI Express slot however most people have epias and they only have 1 PCI slot so finding such cards is harder.

I haven't had any trouble with 4 monitors and 1 TV, all being run from one computer.
I used a FX5900SE in the AGP slot (2 monitors). Then I added a GF4MX440 (these are both nVidia cards if you don't know) to run two more monitors.
Plus I have a Hauppauge PVR-350 (PCI video capture card) that has a hardware MPEG-2 decoder, so I can play MPEG-2 files that are stored on my HD, on my TV, while using nearly no CPU resources.

Are you able to see different things on different screens? For example, I would like to have a lilliput on the drivers side for gps, and be able to have the passenger watch a movie on another screen, running from the same comp. Are you able to do this with your setup? Any more details on it would be awesome

yes. dual monitors allows you to have totally different windows open in different screens. It's called dualview for nvidia cards, and its very simple to do!
Daz155HGT: Just go buy you a nvidia card!

Yes. You can drag windows around, from monitor to monitor, like it's one big desktop.
The TV is not like the desktop, because it only gets a signal fro the capture card. You could use the TV out on one of the vid cards, but you have to lose a monitor (each card does two outputs only).
I have not had any problem getting my nVidia cards to play nice with each other. You would probably not want to mix manufacturers here though. I have even heard some say that there is big problems trying to get two ATI cards running on the same PC. Stick with nVidia for the least trouble, IMHO.
If you use a dual-head card (two outputs on the same card), from nVidia, ATI, or Matrox, you should not have any trouble getting two monitors going. My experience is only with nVidia, though.
Here's a pic for you. Here there are only 3 monitors and a TV hooked up. Plus 2 more monitors that are on another PC.

A new PC it is then...
Thanks for the quick help guys...
I cannot use a different graphics card in my current PC, as it has a built in 32mb G/fix card...
I did buy a new computer to use in my car, but before i even thought about planning the install, i had a power serge in my house, which fried my m/b, processor, and other bits and bobs...so i ended up using the majority of that PC in my home PC.
I had a Nvidia twin-view g/fix card a couple of years ago, and that worked very well for years (but i think i only tried the twinview facility on the odd occasion), so i presume thats the same thing...
Another quick question regarding eCar's comments, how can you run 2 VGA cards from the same PC?
I can understand using 1 VGA card with 2 outputs, and video out on the PCI TV card...which is also an option i could consider...but is it possible to run 2 VGA cards?
My plans were based around running a maximum of 2 screens, but if i could have 3, that would be my perfect setup...
1 - ?" Widescreen for Digital clocks (MPH, RPM, Fuel etc...)
2 - 7"Lilliput touchscreen for control, and driver viewing (GPS, Music Vids, Movies etc)
3 - 15" TFT passenger screen (Music Vids, Movies etc)
Thanks again for all the responses

Obviously you can't have two AGP cards, since a mobo has only one AGP slot.
But one AGP and one PCI card like I have (my GF4MX440 is a PCI card), or 2 PCI cards will work.
And no, you probably can't use the onboard graphics and a graphics card at the same time. But you should be able to disable the onboard graphics, and use a card alone.

I realised that, but thought there may be some bit of hardware out there that split 1 AGP slot into 2 (like the PCI cards you can get)

The PC i was using was a small form factor office based PC, and doesnt have an AGP slot, it has worked well for me for a good few months as it was a 1.2ghz with 256mb RAM, but i will have to go for the new PC option to get what a need...
Don't think i will go for a PCI g/fix card though as all the ones i can find are either rubbish or far too expensive
I think i will stick with the 3 screens though, and get a Nvidia g/fix card with dual view, and a VGA splitter...
This way i will be able to show my cars gauges on my one screen, and then output the movie/video to the other 2 screens via a VGA splitter, and control it with my touchscreen...
I would be greatful if anyone can point out any flaws in my master plan
Daz
Edit:
Just searching around for some more bits and i came across this, it has very high reviews, and for the money it looks good value...has anyone come across this card? (I think its made by Leadtek)
Winfast A340 TD256

Right now I'm using an ATI card with a nvidia card. No big deal here. Just make sure you use the latest drivers.
