Motorized LCD Display - CD ROM

I was wondering if anyone already tried to use a CD ROM to make a motorized lcd display. I was playing with one last night and it doesn't seem too bad. The only thing I haven't been able to come up with is a way to make the screen stand up.

It should be pretty easy to make the screen slide out, to make it stand up you would have to do it manually, but still, its better than nothing. And I think it helps cause the screen is not always showing, that way people might not be as tempted to brake into your car.

the tray itself is pretty flimsy, and when fully extended with weight on the end it gets tough for the drive system to pull it back in.

Not to mention if one small part breaks, the whole system is dead, and no two drive manf use the same parts...

I could imagine that you could use some sort of spring loading to make the screen tilt then have it on a hinge of some sort. I've been playing with something similar. I want my screen to slide in and out and I was going to make my own setup.

It's so cool to have the LCD come out and stand up when the car is started, I'm trying to figure out a way to do the same thing with the steering wheel. It will be so cool!

I was thinking actually that it might be better instead of having the screen attached to the end of the CDROM tray, to have the rail imovable and have the motor that moves it attached to the screen; that way the rails would not move, but the screen with the motor. I would just take the rail appart from the CDROM tray and glue it on the side of a housing for it. But now I am having trouble finding a way to attach the motor to the rail in order to do that. Not sure this made sense, but I think its better than putting the screen at the end of the tray.

Look at some older flatbed scanners too. The big thick ones. They use a pretty thick rail on one side, and a rubber belt system.

Those scanners are way too big though to implement in a smaller environment.
