graphic LCD or PSOne LCD

Ive got a Sharp LM24014 240x64 LCD. I also bought a used 5" PSOne LCD. I was planning to use the Playstation screen til I read about C-sync issues. So I turned to the graphic LCD. But now I learn that I need to build a circuit to produce -9V.
I'm wondering which direction I should take. Should I build the C-sync converter (MatrixPC has a schematic, etc) and use the PSOne LCD or build a negative voltage generator (still looking for plans for this) and use the graphic LCD?
This would be my first time building a circuit, but I got this far so I might as well go all the way. If the C-sync converter isnt too complex, I'd rather build that one and use the 5" color LCD.

emachines pc with intel 810 chipset and onboard graphics. i installed powerstrip and it had the C-sync checkbox greyed out...

Can the onboard video output the special timings??

I thought powerstrip could create custom timings for all video cards, but that must not be the case. How would I tell if the onboard video can handle the timings? Would a 810 datasheet tell me the maximum timings the video can output??
I dont have the PSOne wired up yet. I bought it used and have a week left to return it. So I wanted some advice before I rip it open or give up and take it back.
Your Geforce MX handles C-sync so I guess you didnt have to worry about all this. I'd rather make do with the graphic LCD than buy a new video card.

Not only that, but my Geforce MX card was like $40. You can get PCI versions too. But no, I don't think your onboard video will do the correct timings. Best way to see would be to fire up powerstrip and just try.

noob question...
can changing timings on my primary monitor damage it?? i could try to set the timings to those given by M Pro or Starfox (whoever had a NTSC version). The more I think about it, I would spend the money for a Geforce MX. The only issue is that AGP/PCI card setup will be harder to mount in the car than just the motherboard I was hoping for.

...I just gave my brother a ATI 7000. If these support C-sync, it might be time for him to upgrade so I can get my Radeon back.

I'd go with the Graphic LCD.. no squinting and it fits in your dash. -9V shouldn't be too hard- I would just try to find a 9V regulator then use a voltage reverser like this one. As long as it doesn't need much amperage on the -9V line this should work fine I would think.

Yup, I ran my screen off of an ATI 7000/VE for a while. Then I got my MX card cause it was low-profile to fit in my dash. Click on the link in my sig to see what I'm talking about. Wasn't too bad. It's a really small card.

And yeah, changing the timings could possibly damage your monitor, though I've never ruined any of mine, they just shut off if the timing is wrong. Every monitor is different though.

Graphic LCD is low-tech man. If at all possible, go with the PSone screen, much much cooler.

First, I'll test the onboard video at those timings (using my old monitor, just in case...) If it works, I'll consider building the C-sync circuit. If not, I'll try to find a used PCI Geforce MX or PCI?? VE/7000. I forgot my old ATI 7000 is AGP and the 810 mobo doenst have a AGP slot.

But I think I'll start wiring the LCD so I can test it. Tidder, do you have a schematic for your wiring? I assume you didnt need to alter the wiring when you switched video cards. There are so many different versions online, I would like to use the one most similar to my setup. You have a offical Sony NTSC version, right?

I definitely would prefer to get the PSone LCD working. Its bigger, color TFT, and I can control it with a mouse instead of serial buttons or a hacked keypad.

I have a pretty good how-to with pictures if you want it. It's for the wiring only, no software setup or anything. It's at home, so you'll have to wait until this evening.

And yes, it's the official sony PSone LCD.

Thanks so much for your help! Wiring is the trickiest part for me. I think I can handle the timings. It seems like a trial and error type of job.
