It shouldn´t be to difficult to have a pulse generated when the reverse light turns on. The big problem is that the lilliput button cycles thru tree inputs. We had to achieve a way to generate one pulse when reverse on, and two pulses when reverse off.
It will probably be easyer to get this done by software. Use a usb cam and some type of serial controler ( Frodo have done this to disable video when handbrake is off, by using only a relay, and there is already around a small app to display a usb cam window). When reverse light is on, your app would get a usbcam window on top, when reverse off the window would go away
It would be great if possible.

hard bit is knowing which mode the monitor is in. You can easily get the reverse light to simulate the AV/TV button on the lilliput but as it's a toggle on momentary if you have already manually switched it to TV it will then switch it to VGA.

yeh, I trying to figure out the exact thing for my lilli. I heard those cheese boxes are expensive though. This is mostly for cool factor, so I would like to keep the costs down.
I also want to avoid opening the Lilliput up and voiding the warranty.

Yes use a cheese box. They aren't too bad -- like 50 bucks. Check ebay. They are sold there from time to time.
Note that the cheeze box outputs 640x480 and my computer is set to use 800x600 -- sometimes the lilliput has problems resyncing. While the computer is booting it's not too bad.. Obviously if you run your desktop in 640x480 you will not have any trouble either..

If someone wants to poke around their Lilliput controller board with a meter or scope, you may be able to find a signal (or signals) which can be used to detect which mode it's in (VGA, Vid1, Vid2). If you had that, then the cycling wouldn't be so bad.
I've been wanting to do this, but have no desire to rip my screen out of the truck (again) and crack it open. Someone getting ready to do the Cayote mod on their screen would be in a good position to get an answer for us.

Is there something cheaper than the cheesbox that does the same thing?
Creative solutions?

Nope. The cheese box is, by all standards, insanely cheap for a scan converter. You might get lucky with something on ebay, though it may not be as easy to hack as the cheese box. I got my cheese box for about $25 from ebay.
One reason the cheese box is easy to hack for this purpose is that the switch that toggles between the VGA pass through input and the composite video input is a cheap DPST manual toggle switch that can be replaced with a 12V DPST relay triggered by the reverse lights. Any other scan converter i've ever seen has an electronic pushbutton 'mode' switch -- and if you could toggle that type of switch cheaply, you could simply toggle the lilliput's video input button instead of bothering with the scan converter in the first place.
