Resolution confusion

I'm rather confused about resolutions, concerning the 7" SP7 and 7 " Lilliput. They both have the same aspect ratio, the same DPI and same Physical resolution, however, the SP7 claims to support resolutions of 640X480 - 1600X1200 while the Lilliput only claims 640X480 - 1024X768.

I'm wondering if anyone using either of these two products can confirm the highest resolution with the maximum clarity. I would rather have the Lilliput if I could match the resolution of the SP7 but if the SP7 has higher resolution with higher quality and is less expensive I would have to choose that.

I ented to use this just but setting it somewhere on my dash and using it with my notebook for GPS while I travel.

My notebook features an ATI Radeon 7500C, 32 MB of RAM and resolution steps at 640X480; 800X600; 1024X768; 1280X1024; 1600X1200 for the VGA/Composite RCA Outputs

I thank you for any help anyone can provide.

The 'supported resolution' is what you can feed the video to the LCD. If it's higher than the LCD's native (physical) resolution, it'll downscale to the native res. Your best image quality will come from feeding the LCD its native resolution.

So 800X480 is that actual resolution you'll get reguardless to what is sent to either of those two models?

Well, if you send it a 640x480 signal you'll get a slightly warped 640x480 image But basically yes, unlike a CRT, an LCD has a set number of physical pixels, and that's what you'll get. Some LCDs do a better job than others of stretching other resolutions to the native res, but you'll always get the best picture if you're in the native resolution in the first place.

The Lilliput doesn't specify but the SP7 states an 800X480 physical resolution, My notebook doesn't have that resolution so It would get skewed, I guess. I suppose that's a decent resolution for a media interface but not so great for a good GPS monitor.

The SP7's screen shot on the product page makes it seem like it's super high resolution, sort of deceiving, don't you think?

Yeah, I have an 1600x1200 display (in front of me, not in my car ) and my taskbar isn't as wide as on that product shot.

There are utilities out there that allow you to set your video to unorthodox resolutions. I can't remember any of them off the top of my head, but I bet a search will turn it up.

800x480 is actually a very good resolution as it goes. In comparison, consider that many factory nav system screens run something like 400 x 240.
