Actually the advanced timing button now is clickable. But now the custom resolutions button is inactive

There won't be a single solution that will work for everyone. Different display adapters, different drivers and maybe even different firmware or revisions inside the displays. Lot of variables to factor in.

Can you unselect the padlock icon? It's preventing you from changing the timings. Sometimes after just setting up that resolution or changing other settings it will lock you out until after a reboot.

I've been fighting with powerstrip and Lilliput and to me it seems impossible to get the lilliput to report 800X480, changing the total no. of horizontal pixels by only 8 pixels + or - you gan get it to report either 848X400 or 640X480.

So I just played around with the settings until I found something that I was happy with and then I probably wont bother with the fact that it still reports 848X480.

Lilliput displaying 800X480, but reporting 848X480
Centrafuse, 848X480 Skin getting cropped on the right side
Background image, cropped and then horizontally resized to 800... vertical resolution became 479 pixels, so pretty close.

I just called my friend at VIA to encourage the bios team into enabling 800X480 in the next release. Their answer was that the hardware isn't an issue, but they weren't aware that there was much demand as only one person has ever requested it.
They will also try to get it supported on the new Nano board.

Assholes. Just do a little search on viaarena.com forums (they call them "official"). You will realize yourself how much demand is there.

Only one request my ***.

I personally sent one about 4months ago, and after various comversations and emails got a modded 1.16 BIOS and an updated 2kXP widescreen driver off them but quess what - that didn't work either.

I also told them to look in this forum to check interest levels. And around the same time, there was at least two other MP3Car members who told me they'd also contacted VIA...

There's nearly 15000 members on here now and if only 10% of us had the Via/Lilli combo that would mean 1500 dispondent Via Customers.

They obviously don't talk to each other in the office

John

I sent a letter to Richard_Brown@via.com.tw back on June 24th of 2004.

I got a response from TimHandley@via.com.tw on June 28th. His response was:

Thank you for your email regarding the VIA EPIA M10000. There are quite a few enthusiasts using the M10000 for car PCs and we often get requests regarding graphics output and resolutions to support with future versions. These requests are a valuable source of feedback for us at VIA and we are busy working on support for 800 x 480 at the moment. When this resolution is supported, we will announce and make it available from our website.

Best Regards

Tim Handley

I sent a follow up inquiry several months ago but got no response.

My letter to VIA

This is what I wrote to VIA:

Mr. Brown:

I am not sure you are the right person of whom I should make this request, but I hope you will take the time to read my letter.

I am an almost happy owner of a VIA EPIA M-10000 mini-ITX motherboard. I, like many other users with whom I am in communication intend to use this product in my car as the heart of a gps-navigation / mp3 player / wireless networking computer. So far everything has gone well except for one glaring omission.

The predominant display device being used for this application is the 7" diagonal LCD display. These displays use an LCD module that has a native resolution of 800 X 480 pixels. Attempting to display anything other than this (800 X 600, for example) causes the image to appear distorted on the display.

The problem with VIA's EPIA M-10000 motherboard is that the graphics driver supplied for the onboard CLE-266 chip DOES NOT SUPPORT 800 X 480 resolution. Further, it cannot be forced to display this resolution using any readily available tools like "powerstrip". It is possible to use an aftermarket graphics board to achieve this, but this adds unnecessary expense to the project, and in most cases there is insufficient room in the case to permit one to do so. So we are forced to use 1280 X 768, which is ridiculously high on such a small screen, and makes reading text nearly impossible.

The result is that there are many of us out here who were enthusiastic about your product when we purchased it, but have since discovered that we cannot use it in our application. The development of an appropriate driver for this display device would seem to represent a very small investment by a company with the kind of muscle VIA can apply, and would alleviate the problem. This would result in many more users implementing their design using your motherboard.

A visit to http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/mp3car-technical/ will give you some idea of the frustration we users are expressing over this inability.

Could you please investigate the possibility of developing the 800 X 480 resolution into the display driver for the EPIA M-10000 motherboard?

If there is someone within your organization who would be the preferred channel for this sort of communication, could you please forward this to that person? I would be most appreciative if I could find the right resource within VIA to make this a reality.

Thanks very much for taking the time to read my rant, and I hope to hear from you about this soon.

OK guys, since so far we appearently failed to convince VIA to provide us working 800x480 driver for EPIA-M, without actual and irrelevat need for having Lilliput on site, I am going to do 2 things:

1) reveal my contacts within VIA:
ThomasChao@via.com.tw
RickLee@via.com.tw
NicoleHsu@via.com.tw - account manager

use them as you as you consider.

2) There were posts about sucesss running 800x480 on Epia MII under WinXP. Since Both EPIA M and MII use same graphics core in same north bridge (CLE266), I am about to try to extract VBIOS from EPIA-MII and combine with BIOS in EPIA-M using CBROM.EXE utility. I encourage enyone with access to EPROM flash machine to test the same and share the findings. As soon as you succeed to use MII VBIOS on M10K, you will be able to use MII WinXP drivers.

I would like to ask anyone who uses MII and WinXP to confirm us what BIOS and driver revision he uses and wether and test 800x480 resolution availability. This will help me with my second task.

what update are you talking about?

mpattonm: so users that have the MII currently are running 800x480? Maybe you should start a new thread asking for MII users help - you prob will get a better response
