This is what I wrote to VIA:
Mr. Brown:
I am not sure you are the right person of whom I should make this request, but I hope you will take the time to read my letter.
I am an almost happy owner of a VIA EPIA M-10000 mini-ITX motherboard. I, like many other users with whom I am in communication intend to use this product in my car as the heart of a gps-navigation / mp3 player / wireless networking computer. So far everything has gone well except for one glaring omission.
The predominant display device being used for this application is the 7" diagonal LCD display. These displays use an LCD module that has a native resolution of 800 X 480 pixels. Attempting to display anything other than this (800 X 600, for example) causes the image to appear distorted on the display.
The problem with VIA's EPIA M-10000 motherboard is that the graphics driver supplied for the onboard CLE-266 chip DOES NOT SUPPORT 800 X 480 resolution. Further, it cannot be forced to display this resolution using any readily available tools like "powerstrip". It is possible to use an aftermarket graphics board to achieve this, but this adds unnecessary expense to the project, and in most cases there is insufficient room in the case to permit one to do so. So we are forced to use 1280 X 768, which is ridiculously high on such a small screen, and makes reading text nearly impossible.
The result is that there are many of us out here who were enthusiastic about your product when we purchased it, but have since discovered that we cannot use it in our application. The development of an appropriate driver for this display device would seem to represent a very small investment by a company with the kind of muscle VIA can apply, and would alleviate the problem. This would result in many more users implementing their design using your motherboard.
A visit to
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/mp3car-technical/ will give you some idea of the frustration we users are expressing over this inability.
Could you please investigate the possibility of developing the 800 X 480 resolution into the display driver for the EPIA M-10000 motherboard?
If there is someone within your organization who would be the preferred channel for this sort of communication, could you please forward this to that person? I would be most appreciative if I could find the right resource within VIA to make this a reality.
Thanks very much for taking the time to read my rant, and I hope to hear from you about this soon.
