do you think this card will draw to much power and heat?

Perhaps you should post that under power supply section to get an answer?
as far as which card supports the native 800x480, i guess very soon we can compile a list when more and more of us turn to PCI video card.
So far Radeon seemed to enjoy little success. MX440 works. your FX5500.

Its obvious that the higher end cards have higher chance of support custom native resolution. But for alot of us, who does not play 3D games in the car (kind of make u wonder why u would), spending the price of the board just to get a video card ain't quite right.
I was hoping to get the lowest possible config that works (it kind of irritates me big time, the fact that alot of us use EPIA board for it's form factor & price). Would have gone for a cheaper board if i could find it. So for now, the MX440 would have to do (Singapore $ 99. about 60 USD).
good luck to those with same quest.

If you have the Xenarc, the issue shouldn't be finding a video card that supports 800x480. The issue is making 800x480 actually work with the display.

Finishing the planning stages of my CarPC ver. 1.0. I'm using an FIC Cube Mini-ITX case from woot.com ($99+$5 s/h), 1.8 GHz Celeron from ebay ($31.15), surplus RAM ($0). Going to power with inverter until I figure out how to wire the DC/DC.
Now here's the question relevant to this thread. I need a display. I guess people are having a hard time getting native 800x484 to work. It looks some people have had good results with the MX440, some people haven't. Can anybody vouch for the MX440 working correctly with 800x484 without any hassles? I ask because I don't want to spend $500 on a VGA monitor if I can't get the display to sync 1:1. The other option is to just use a standard TFT display that uses S-Video. It'll be a lot cheaper. So, I need input on two options (or another option if you can think of anything):
Option 1
-Lilliput/Xenarc in-dash monitor from digitalww.com
-800x484 capable video card (if it exists)
Pros: Higher video quality
Cons: Hard to sync
Option 2
-Cheapie in-dash monitor
-S-Video out through video card.
Pros: Cheap
Cons: May not sync 1:1 through s-video, lower video quality.
I'm thinking that neither option will allow me to get 1:1 video, so if that's the case, should I just go for the cheaper option and save some $$$? What will look less crappy?

You're looking for 800x480, not 800x484.

I have a Gain/Xenarc lcd and have been using both a Radeon and a Geforce display card. The cards are quite happy outputting 800*480 (using Powerstrip or the nvidia driver respectively), but I can't get the monitor to recognise it as 800*480. I either get 640*480 (display looks bad) or 852*480 (display looks much better) coming up on the OSD. I have using the timing values given on the Xenarc website and have tried tweaking the values in all sorts of ways, but still get only either 640*480 or 852*480 on the OSD.
Given that the card is outputing 800 pixel horizontal lines, does it matter that the screen thinks they are 852 pixel lines and samples them, persumably at 800 points, to form the pixel values it needs for its native resolution? Am I chasing something that doesn't matter in trying to get the display to realise it is being fed the correct 800*480 signal? Does the display just sample the analog signals at the points it needs to line up with its 800 native pixels? However, this wouldn't explain why the monitor looks so bad when it misdetects the 800*480 signal as 640*480. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

sorry to hear about your TC dying man.
I just thought I'd inform everybody that the Xebarc timings posted on the previous page does NOT give a 1:1 pixel mapping on the Lilliput.
I tried some different settings yesterday, and I still havent managed to get the lilliput to dispplay a PERFECT 1:1 800x480.
I'm currently running 800x480x72Hz on my Radeon 9200 and it looks very similar to 800x600 or 640x480 quality-wise, but in the correct aspect-ratio . I might try 1000x600 next since it is also the correct aspect ratio for the Lilliput screen.
Note that the acpect is actually 15:9, NOT 16:9 for the Lilliput screens (confirmed by measuring and testing it).

sigh...
sux
anyway, to add to that, gain/xenarc/digitalww 7VGA suppose to use the same VGA controller. but i agree, my eventual timiing is a little different.
not sure about lilliput.
as for the aspect ratio, actually don't need to measure. the product spec already say so.

Hehe, that's what I meant. Typo. Any luck with the 800x480 with any of the cards? Geforce 440 MX doesn't work?

I have used the Xenarc website 800*480 timings with 61Hz rather than 60Hz and this recognised as 852*480 (not completely sure what difference this makes). My circles do look round and the quality is better than 640*480 or 800*600.

you can get 800x4880 using Geforce 4 MX, just do custome resolution.

Have you tryed Powerstrip???
It can make all custoum resolutions possible.
I didnt try it on a Via though, but I think that it would work.
