i just installed my screen and carpc yesterday (xenarc + epia10000) and was worried about this resolution issue, but it looks amazingly good at 800x600 I think ill just leave it at that.

Quick Summary

Just to make sure I got everything straight up to here
(Since I'm about to order my 7" screen too).

If I have a MII-10000 I WON'T be able to reach 800x480 with the
onboard video (S3) Controller, nor will any utility such as Powerstrip
help me.
The only option(s) with the onboard VGA is: 640x480, 800x600.

With some 3rd part PCI (such as GF440MX etc.) It's possible to reach
those resolution with custom display timings, either through NVIEW / Powerstrip.

As a side note/question...: I wonder if the free Linux driver could be "presuaded" to skip the first (600-480) scanlines, so that is would output only the remaining 480 lines and thus "simulate" a 800x480 mode...

Yes, you can get the graphics card to do that easily. That isn't the problem, the problem ist that the Lilliput screen will report it is getting a diferent resolution and won't look all that great.

Its a pity Lilliput doesn't step up and its engineers suggest powerstrip timings, rates and porch settings that give optimal results. Has anyone asked though, I wonder?

I either get 640*480 (display looks bad) or 852*480 (display looks much better) coming up on the OSD. I have using the timing values given on the Xenarc website and have tried tweaking the values in all sorts of ways, but still get only either 640*480 or 852*480 on the OSD.

Given that the card is outputing 800 pixel horizontal lines, does it matter that the screen thinks they are 852 pixel lines and samples them, persumably at 800 points, to form the pixel values it needs for its native resolution? Am I chasing something that doesn't matter in trying to get the display to realise it is being fed the correct 800*480 signal? Does the display just sample the analog signals at the points it needs to line up with its 800 native pixels? However, this wouldn't explain why the monitor looks so bad when it misdetects the 800*480 signal as 640*480. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Exactly.

He can't get the monitor to recognize the resolution. Thats the problem.

Sorry, I wasn't too clear was I?

I've asked Xenarc via telephone. They claim the settings on their website work. I seriously believe that they understand that their current 7" display WILL NOT display 800x480 but they still claim it will. I have not heard a report of even *one* person getting 800x480 to work on their Xenarc (or Lilliput). What a scam...

just for the record.. the onboard videocard on the asus pundit supports the 800x640 right out of the box... since there are no skins for media car made in this rez i just use the 800x600

It seems people are finding various ways to get their cards to output a 800*480 signal that is displayed (e.g. in my case using the Xenarc timings), but no one can get the monitor to recognise it as 800*480 (e.g. in my case it is recognised as 852*480).

I don't know enough about what goes on inside the monitor to understand what effect this has. The horizontal scan lines are analog signals. The card is forming this analog signal to represent 800 pixels per horizontal line. I assume the monitor samples the analog signal to produce its 800 digital pixel values to drive the LCD. If the monitor just sampled at 800 points in the analog signal, then it wouldn't matter that the monitor thought it was a 852 pixel line as it would be getting the right answer for the wrong reason. However, if the monitor is doing something more sophisticated and trying to interpolate from 852 sample points to 800 pixel values, then that wouldn't produce the right answers.

Can anyone explain what actually goes on inside the monitor to convert the analog horizontal scan line signal into the 800 pixel values that drive the LCD? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but this question is really bugging me.

i have gotten the xenarc to properly report 800x480 so it possable with the proper card so xenarc is correct in there statement of native resolution
