Quest for 800x480

after searching through the whole forum and having a go myself,
finally gave up and concede to the fact that onboard video JUST can't do 800X480

finally resorted to using a PCI video card, which, is HARD to come by. PCI express may be, PCI is hard to find (just like usb gameport. "Game port? who uses game port nowadays)

i was lucky to have a PCI extension board lying around. but you first have to change the heatsink on the board to something shorter.

the card i managed to find is Inno3d's MX440 based. the driver allows you to define custom output resolution.

now in the process of installing. will post when i manage to get it to work

i sent an email to VIA to suggest more flexible resolution in the future.

Good luck! I can't get 800x480 to work on my ATi 9600. Even with the utilitiy to change the refresh rate my Xenarc won't display it correctly.

dude
read the subject line. i am trying to get 800x480.
why? you might ask?

coz it's the native resolution.

i can get 848x480 on the onboard video too, so can just about everyone else.

I'm trying to get 800x480 working using a PCI Radeon 9200 card and the 7" Lilliput.

I'm using a flexible PCI-riser (I had to extend the flex-cables) and cut a small part off the gfx board using a dremel (I actually cut off a piece of the VGA connector)to get it to fit inside my custom 1-din enclosure. I also had to cut of off about one centimeter of the stock Epia TC boards heatsink.

I have not yet managed to get the exact timings for the horizontal-pane (800 pixels) so the image still lookes a little "jaggy". But the vertical is ok.

800x480x70Hz or 800x480x75Hz seems to get me the best picture on my Lilliput using the Radeion, since 60Hz looks like crap.

Some pictures:

Okie, here's my situation (and for others who use the same hardware setup)

I am using a VIA EPIA TC-10000. It has onboard video which is base on S3 chipset. It outputs standard resolutions, ie 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 ect.....
note that these are 4:3 aspect ratio (ie horizontal:vertical)

if you are using this board on standard VGA display, all's danty and fine.

However, for those of us using 7inch touchscreen panel from Xenac/Gain/Lilliput, it spells trouble. If u have notice, those panels are wide format, and to make it worse, it's not the more common 16:9 format which some of u assumed it to be (848x480 = 16:9). It turns out that the panel has native resolution of 800X480 (5:3).

And this is not support by the onboard video.

Some might ask why not just leave it at 848x480? it's not that far apart? it's 16:9 compare to 15:9. the fact is, it does matter. Circles ain't circles, and text don't look right (coz it's not dot for dot).

The direct alternative is to use 1280x768 (5:3). In this case, the aspect ratio issue is resolved, BUT not the text. U can barely make out your text.

Hence the quest.
kao

ps. if you think aspect ratio for PC monitors are confusing, wait till you work with video ON PC.

ha ha ha. way to go dude. you are using TC board too!

well, i have the extension cable as well. but my was too long instead of short. However, i have reservation about using extensin cables as PCI signals are quite sensitive (standing wave) to path. but great that it work for u.

looks like your dremel did a fair bit of work. my dremel shaft is wobbling a bit and am reluctant to use it too much.

willl post result tonight after i test it.

Looking good, i wish you well in your quest for 800x480

I am possibly going the other way while I've still got my Epia...I might put my screen at 1280x768, because AIMEE has the option to expand text proportionally to the screen size. You double the screen resolution, the font size doubles etc

800x600 looks MUCH better on a Lilliput/Xenarc than 848x480, because you can notice distortion in the horizontal plane (ie trying to fit 848 pixels into 800) more than distortion on the vertical plane (fitting 600 pixels into 480)

Hi Garry
how's your AIMEE going? what GPS module are u using? need a tester? :P

anyway, I have managed to got the 800x480 to work. same thing, need tweaking with timing. but at least now the aspect ratio is correct.

kao

ps. sorry for the poor photo, eye a little crossed after playing with display timing for over an hour
