I have two old cell phones that I'm thinking of using the LCD from

to use as just a text based mp3 player reader display thingy.

Like standard $50 MP3 players show - title, artist, etc.

is it possible? can i pull off the LCD and somehow convert it to maybe USB so that my computer can output WINAMP info (or some other mp3 software info)?

I don't have the funds for a $20-$900etc LCD screen so I'm going to try and go with what I have, if it's somewhat easy.

I have a few spare computers and computer parts lying around so I shouldnt' have to spend any money on cables etc. I think i even have a soldering iron floating around somewhere.

the one phone is a Nextel I30sx and the other is 1997 Ericson(sp) something or other.

thanks in advance. I'm a noob to this whole scene so please bear with me.

I would imagine that it's next to impposable to do that. I mean realistically. If I were you, I'd consider a $100 text-only LCD, some even have buttons. There is alot of good software to interface them with winamp. I know you're strapped for cash (arn't we all ) but it may be worth saving for. Plus they look badass.

Just thinking off the top of my head with no experience in this matter at all, but ...

If you can find a USB cable for your phone, you might be able to control many capabilities through the USB port. If so, then you should be able to rip the phone apart, seperate/lengthen/remove parts to fit your needs. Just a quick idea if you haven't thought about it yet.

ahhhh

yea that's what i was thinking of when i got the idea to do that to the phone screen.

hmm. I think it would be really cool to gut the inside of the phone and just use the keypad somehow, and the screen. a cell phone mp3 player.

i'll keep my eye on those text only screens though. that might be the easy way to go. Thanks!

I was thinking of doing the same thing. Replacement phone screens can be picked up cheap off ebay, or use what you've already got.
