Use a smart CRT instead of LCD

If space is not an issue would a CRT be better than a LCD as far as glare, brightness, and viewing angle? It probably would be cheaper.

What would be the disadvantages besides size and weight? Would power consumption be much more?

Power consumption is amazinly several times higher
a typical 7 inch tft i believe is around 8 watts, a 15 inch panel is 30-40 watts, a 15" crt is around a 100 watts,
apart from that brightness does normally tend to be brighter, i would say that crts will not like the bumpy rite however, youll proberly find that the gun keeps fallen apart inside and that u loose R,G,B ocassionally due to the vibrations

On a trip to Mendelsohn's I picked up a 6" B&W VGA monitor that was setup for 12v. It gets warm, but definitely not hot enough to be any worry. No touch screen on it, but the company that made it (who's name eludes me ATM) also had touchpad overlays for it...

Just FYI

I remember on Knight Rider, Kit had a CRT. Go for it! David Hasselhoff styles!

Well built CRT's are surprisingly strong, but still probably not viable in a car (except for smaller <10" variants). Despite taking a good chunk more power, and a good chunk more space...if properly installed you'd probably have no trouble. If you consider that most commercial jets still use CRT projectors (and then consider the terbulence) you can throw a lot of shock at them. However, I reckon its probably easier in a car to get a good picture from an LCD compared to CRT considering the totally analog nature of a CRT and its unwillingness to sit near any magnetics without ruining the scan.

I cheap CRT monitor is also sensitive to the cold. I had to replace the dumb terminal in a dispatch center years ago, took the new one out in the bed of my truck on a cold day and it powered up dim and blurry. I ended up pulling the board out of it and swapping with the one from the dispatch center since that was faster than waiting for it to warm up. got it back to the shop and left it sit until monday when I repaired the pcb and it worked fine since it had thawed out. I had a cap on my truck so it was protected somewhat but still cold.

Assuming you had a way to diffuse the heat.
