I haven't done this yet but I am planning on doing this on a 65 benz I got and I was planning on doing this. Only thing I haven't figured our which might put a wrench in the plan is how to get the speed of the car to be acurate since this was before obd was even thought about. GPS isnt a viable solution since it varies and isnt 100% acurate. I can't take the change of the GPS being wrong saying im doing 55 when im really doing 80. If I cant get a viable solution with PC I am going to use instruments from www.dakotadigital.com

you could do a speed sensor the car should have one
at the very least you could wire tie a magnet to the axel and put a sensor to read the pulses
measure out a mile in pulses / time vola

GPS speed indication is very accurate, btw. Far more accurate then the mechanical gauges in most cars. Position, not as accurate. Altitude, far from accurate. But speed, yeah.

Not if you want it to display your speed anywhere close to real time. If you let it average your speed for several seconds, it will be very accurate.

Yeh, Matrix Orbital LCDCs need a computer, and LCDC is a very good program for that Control over winamp, limited support for WMP, etc

LCD = the thing that displays stuff. LCDC = software that runs the LCD. LCDC supports Matrix Orbital displays, which are USB

The speed sensor on the car is a cable tht screws into the back of the cluster then connects to the transmission so that would work. but I will more than likely being going with a more modern engine/tranny combo probably a small block chevy so I am sure I can get something to work with that.

Anyway, if you get a Matrix Orbital LCD and LCDC, I'm pretty sure that I would be able to whip up some plugin that uses Ninja Monkey's D3 frontend and gets its speed and displays that data on the LCD
