Introduction and question about Car LCD

Hi all,
great forum for this hobby.
My name is David and my two major hobbies are Golf and RC helis.
love going to fun flys and thought it is time to find directions easier.

So, I just got some GPS software and a GPS receiver (Garmin18) for my laptop, even though I haven't played with it much, I'm hocked and it must be permanent in my car (rather truck F150), because I don't want to take the laptop with me at all times.
I looked around for in-car GPS systems, but all the once I liked were in the $1000.00 range.
So I decided to build my own carputer (seem to be able to do a lot more (mp3, dvd, car info etc.) for a lot less money.
I have not spend much time on researching the hardware, since I figured no matter what computer I go with, I will need a screen to see the information I need.

I really like the idea of touch screen and I see that a lot of you use the Lilliput 7" TS LCD that goes for about $280.00
I found THIS
screen on ebay and can't seem to find any information on this forum about it.
is this a good screen or is it worth looking into spending some $60.00 extra for the Lilliput?
any suggestions and/or comments are welcome.

After I decide on the screen, I will start asking lot's of questions about hardware.

there's one of those on the for sale board. it's that exact one. message the guy selling it to see what he thinks, plus i think he's getting rid of it for cheap. the title of his fs thread has dvd rom in it or something.

It depends on what you mean by "a lot less". By the time you add up the motherboard, memory, disk drive, screen, power supply and software (you do pay for software, right? ) then you may find that the total is pretty close to or more than $1,000 U.S. Of course, if you've got components on hand, that helps quite a bit. Check the link in my signature to see a list of the hardware and costs for my system.

On the other hand, you'll have something that adds up to more than just a nav system. Since you fly RC helis, just think of it as a relatively good chopper.

By the way, welcome.

If anyone finds a review of this screen I would be interested as well. The review berty posted seems to think fairly highly of that screen, and if they're at all similar this might be one worth purchasing.

I hope the cost gets nowhere near of the cost of one of my helis

I could use one of my home computers (I have 6 of them on a network at home), cost would be zero $$$$ I even have a power inverter for that.
I could run linux with lots of free software.
I also could use one of my windoze licenses to run XP on it.
I already have the garmin gps18 (paid for)
lots of keyboards (even a mini one) and mouse laying around.
so actually all i would need is a screen and I'm in business
this would be to test and see how far I want to take this.
If I like it just a fracture of how I like golf and helis, money wouldn't be an object anymore, but to many times I have spend to much on something only to find out that I don't even use it and I might rather buy another heli instead .
having learned from my past experiences, I want to see how long this in car GPS thingy lasts and I don't want to be using my laptop.

now, if I decide to go a different route, I would go with the EPIA M10000 mb and use HD, memory etc from what I have laying around and even build a custom case for it.

So, I hope I cleared up what I mean with "a lot less", it means using stuff I already have and not using illegal or stolen soft/hardware

Now back to topic:
anyone knows anything about that screen?

OK, since I couldn't find much inf, I just ordered one.
the sale went as smooth as a baby skin, the seller was very polite and shipped fast.
The screen arrived today and it is a Tview T-700TS.
It comes with extension cable for the screen, the USB and the power connection.
It also includes a remote.
setup was as easy as plugging it in and let the driver install.
I did a four point adjustment and started playing with it.
in a all black screen I can't find a single death pixel and I looked long and hard.
I also can't find any in an all white screen.
I used a stylus pen and the touch is accurate to the pixel.
I can use my finger for larger buttons/icons or my finger nail for smaller and it seems to work flawless.
so far I'm very happy with the whole purchase and the way the screen works.
this is my first small touch screen, so take this for whatever it is worth, I'm no expert at all, but just thought it is fair enough to let you know my opinion about this screen.
only time will tell if it keeps up with every day usage.
I also build a carputer and installed it in my truck (F150), but this will be in another thread after I get the power inverter, which should be here by mid of this week.
stay tuned.

Thanks Data Andriod! How is the picture quality? I don't suppose you have anything to compare it too? Like Cris said, Pictures would be great, I would love to see the thing on and running.

Thanks Data! Looks pretty good for a 200 dollar screen. Looks like there was a lot of light, a bit washed out, but not bad. Thanks for posting this!

because the F150 doesn't have a trunk

I just put the system there to test it for awhile.
later I will move it into the center console (I have a rather large one).
