what is legal and illegal? (screens in cars)
I know there have been couple of posts on this issue. Ok, so it is illegal to have a "sceen" in the front of the driver/front passenger area that is displaying
anything other than navigation.
Secondly a friend of mine was just telling me it is illegal to have a 10" flipdown monitor in the rear(i.e like attached to the roof). Ok so what about headrests e.t.c, I mean has anyone read the DOT handbook, or does anyone have an idea of the true legal setup one can put in car.(especially in regards to this 10" flipdown)
Oh, the car we were arguing about is my friends cadillac sedan,(can't remember the make, but the one that was used in that bad boys II movie).

The answer will change depending on which state you're in, not to mention which country.
I'd be curious why your friend thinks that flipdown monitors in the back would be illegal, did he say why?

I wouldn't listen to your "friend" anymore. Get your answers from

The state is NY, well my friend does like alarm installations e.t.c. He says a customer asked him for 10" flipdown, which he always installed(but never knew what the legal/illegal status was). Ok so the customer shows up b4 the install and says that she doesn't want 10" flipdown anymore that "they said" its illegal. You know how it is "they said", "who said". Well I was there, and I said, I wasen't sure myself, but I know the right place to check is the DOT (Department of Transportation Handbook.). So I figured I threw that question up here, since a lot of people here might have had some sorta user+screen incident with the law. i.e if it is really an issue too, cause most cops wont bother.

Is it posisble that the 10" flip down might block the driver's view to the rear of the vehicle and therefore more it illegal?

Thats what I thought, also, but it is legal to have any depth of tints on your rear windows and rear windshield, as a matter of fact, you can spraypaint it black if you want. So that also obstructs the drivers view to the rear, except when he uses his side mirrors.

So, if I have a 7" video monitor hooked up to a computer with nothing but Frodo and a GPS system, I'm okay, right?
I suppose Solitaire and Minesweeper need to go.
However, if the cop only sees Frodo, I'd doubt that he'd ask if I have a DVD application installed on it...

yea i doubt they'll notice. As long as they didn't see moving images, just to be safe, I make sure I switch to GPS APP when I get pulled over. i.e only for the case of screens in front side of car.

From my understanding, most states require you to have at least two mirrors of visibility to the rear. Some sedans don't have passenger side mirrors, and blocking the rearview might cause you to break that law, although I would imagine that the law doesn't say "you can't have a 10" flipdown in back" but see it saying "two rear vantage views are required" or something similar.
But it's definately a state law question.

It makes you wander how the laptops in public service cars and mobile service guys like sears can do it. I have had a sears repair guy at my house and he had a very stout looking laptop bolted in a frame so that he could type from the driver’s seat. He even ran my credit card from it and printed a little receipt. (He also had one of those huge satellite cans the roof of the van).
I would not think sears would go to the existent to get special permission for those.

there's some clause about information display like that found is police cars and I would guess the sears vehicles don't have the screens on when driving. While I haven't had to deal with the practicality of a cop seeing the screen in the center dash yet. It would be easy to show the gps info. I would just turn off the car and thus the computer as well
