Warning To Lilliput Users...
Howdy Folks,
just got off the phone, been talking to Mo again at Lilliput UK and it seems that most of the failed TS's they've looked at have failed due to heat making the overlay delaminate - basically the glue's melting.
He says that its down to people installing them in cars infront of heater vents or putting them where the sun can get at them directly (when there is any )
BUT - I asked him whether or not it was possible that the heat generated by the screens own electronics could be the culprit as mine did start gettuing rather hot behind the right hand edge of the screen and although he didn't just come out with it and say yes, he didn't deny it. He also made a coment that somebody had tried putting a fan on the back of the case and he'd experienced no problem so far.
So it seems, KEEP IT COOL , and keep it working!
HTH

Good theory. My screen has not given me problems even though sometimes it was too hot to even want to touch with my finger , but maybe I just got one with good glue. Thanks for the info, maybe i'll put a fan behind it anyways since I already have my dash apart!

Surely we shouldn't have to rely on our own modifications to ensure that a product like this will keep on working.
come on Lilliput, stop passing the buck and get your products sorted out straight from the production line.

I remember a while back that somebody took the speaker out and mounted a fan in that same area. I can't remember who or when and I did a quick search, but didn't find it. Maybe someone else will have more luck.

And no amount of little fans is going to protect it again greenhouse heat when you leave the car parked out in the sun in July. The car is going to get to about 150 degrees and that's just the way life is.
Is there a way to protect the screen against that kind of heat in the summer?
As for the heater ducts behind the screen, I haven't put mine in yet, but I was going to wrap the heater ducts with insulation, probably a layer of pink fiberglass used in ceilings, just to keep excess heat off the thing.

The interior of a car is hottest when it is parked in the sun and a fan is not going to help unless it is running and I would not want to drain my battery by running a fan with the engine off.
I would also stay away from using fiberglass insulation in the car as it will be exposed and its dust will get inside your lungs in no time. Use foam insulation instead.

Right, that's why no little fan is going to help when your car is parked. I know that, hence me saying it.
And the insulation in my car wil not be exposed in any way. And you can contain fiberglass insulation without losing it's effectiveness for anyone else who's intersted in that idea.

You can't give up that easily, I still expecting a full report with temperature charts and graphs, on the success or failure of this experiment. j/k

right folks, some peeps taking this the wrong way...
he blamed heaters & sun... I think its the internal electronics being too close, and too hot for the TS. Stop the fan on your mobo's CPU and see how hot it gets! The idea of the fan is to reduce the heat soak that occurs inside the screens case when the screen is on, and to transfer it to the outside of the case. When you feel the case getting hot on the outside at the back think how hot do you think the components inside have gotten?!?
When they get left in the sun its the outside that warms up first, as I'm guessing most people don't have the screen facing the sun.
Also I would imagine that not many of us leave their screen visible to all those tea leaves that would love to nick it, therefore its not in direct sunlight.
It is possible to remove the speaker and place a slim 40mm fan in there without too much work, I too saw that thread.
And with regards to Lilliput sorting our screens out, it would cost them thousands to 'admit' it was a design fault, therefore they wont unless forced to do so.
What we'll probably find is that they change something on newer models to compensate, and continue to just exchange faulty screens for refurbed and repaired screens.
What I was trying to establish is - Is there a way to stop this happening, rather than just moan and sit on my arse waiting for my replacement screen to fail too.
A lot of us on here have lilli's and I for one am stuck with mine as I can't afford to replace mine with a Xenarc or equivelant.
Like I said this isn't about sorting lilliput's issues out, but to help people who already own the screens to extend the life of what is, lets face it a very expensive screen.
They charge a fortune for them because they don't sell that many. Look how cheap 17" LCD TFT screens have come now, they are well under £200

I find it interesting the onboard touchscreen systems of Hondas, Acuras and BMWs are essentially the same TS system, and are mounted where the greenhouse effect could do damage, but never does. It should be possible to do the same with a Xenarc or Lilly.

I agree, Lilliput are just using the cheapest possible components to keep a good profit margin.
That's why they break so often. If we are going to pay high prices for these devices, they should be able to work without problems.
