Newbie: Can aftermarket screens show car info?

BTW, I'm new to this forum. And i am loving this place.
this question is pretty n00b style. Cant wait to get my MECP certification..

Anyway, I have a 2004 Maxima. First lemme state that the max has a screen for navigation (color LCD) and a regular basic one (LED screen).

I have the basic one. The screen shows stuff like radio station, temp, AC settings, Alerts (open trunk, open door etc.) and other stuff that relates to the car. now at first i wanted to get a new screen and then have it where i can switch between regular screen(standard maxima stuff) or CarPC. Then i realized how stupid that was cuz i have the max has LED screen right now. Is there a way a CarPC can mimic that?

You might be able, depending on how the screen works, to wire in some sort of video source switcher. If the screen is TV resolution, 1v two conductor signal, then it could be as simple as soldering an RCA connector onto it and using an aftermarket switcher. The problem is, you'd be limited to the low rez TV style signal for your carputer, but it'd be a low cost way to get into it.

Alternately, you could find a VGA screen that can display 1v video in another mode (like the Lilliput/Xenarcs) that happens to match the dimensions of the built in screen exactly and use the signal switching button that comes with it. That way, you could have high rez VGA output from your carputer, then hit a switch and have your original factory display stuff.

How big is the screen, measuring diagonally? (eg, measure lower left corner to top right corner)
