Anything is possible with the right thinking and the right amount of money

The buttons are for the crappy internal speaker, but since they are buttons, they could be used for other purposes. Depends on your knowledge of electronics and wiring.

I personally could not tell you how to use them for changing the system volume, but I'm sure there are plenty of people here that could. My thoughts are either a) use them to connect the volume pins on a SB card (search for the thread in Input Devices regarding the SB cards that have this header) or b) make some sort of IR sending unit that responds to these button presses and send IR signals to an IR receiver on the PC, which then you can use Girder to control the system volume.

if you can, try and get yourself a multimedia keyboard (such as gateway's OEM keyboards). most of them that have volume keys seem to be able to control the volume even without whatever extra software it came with. hack it up and wire the screens volume buttons in place of the keyboards volume buttons.

sure, it may be overkill, but it works.

Deffo overkill. There are several ways to do it. Best i know will work would be to hack a gamepad and wire the buttons upto that and use girder and the HID plugin. You couls then use the joysticks as a nice pointer too. Girder or some other software may also be able to just take a signal direct fromt he serial port hooked upto these buttons. There shoudl be some basic switch -> serial circuits floating around.

Girder is a program - i suggest you for it and read about it. it is very useful.

s for the gamepad - take the buttons on the lilliput and wire them to some buttons on the game pad

Or look up serial input devices. YOu ay also be able to hack up a keypad and use that with girder - eg assign + to increase volume and - to decrease volume. This would be a really, really easy way. The free version might be available on that old free version site but the $20 version will have better support and some nice new plugins (like the HID plugin which you could use for a hacked gamepad. HID = human interface device eg gamepad, joystick etc. This plugin will let you do anything you want using any HID connected to your PC - very useful)
