O.K., I gutted the rear of the screen...the idea here is to have this screen super brite..daylight viewable.....I have to fully expose the rear of the screen to the light source.....there's a board that I have to fold up so I built a box out of stainless steel deep enough to have the board sideways to not block light. I took the back of the screen apart & cut out some bracing for the rear opaque reflector sheet, which I also removed with the thought of allowing more light to enter from the rear.
at this point there is a lot of light projecting out of the rear....which should be a good thing I guess for when I have the rear mounted bulbs......the overall depth is 2 1/2"...I should be able to get a lot of bulbs in there. I am going to use ccfl bulbs on a dimming inverter.....I'm still considering.. but It will probably be between 8 & 16 bulbs....I'm shooting for 1000+ nit brightness

I had to take the lcd apart to remove the rear layer & cut out this brace....or it's shadow would have been right across the screen..........

AWSOME!!!!!! this looks really really cool.
I have an extra allbrite houseing that my originial panel was in before the panel got smashed. Its a 10.4 so obvisouly the reflective films and such are of no use, but it does have ccfl's capable of 1400 nitts. Let me know if it could help you out, I have been currently useing it to fit the new dash peice I am making but I dont need th ccfls to do that.
keep the pics comming!

hey alti, thanks for the consideration...do you have an inverter to power the ccfls? If you do let me know & I'll pm you about this further...as I am anxious to get this going.I've been thinking about your bezel, hows it going...too bad you wern't closer to my body shop in brooklyn, I could defanately help you get that looking good...I'm waiting to see how you do with it
I have to extend the bezel in my center console to fit this screen where the 8" was, it's plastic so I'll basically treat it like a bumper...cut & weld, then finish off with bumper repair products....a lot easier to work with than fiberglass, but this means that I will have to paint all of my dash bezel plastics...something I've been able to avoid until now. My dash is now in pieces.....

the screen will extend from just under the alpine all the way down to the bottom of the extended opening....it will be slightly recessed & angled.....it should look good when it's done, but until then NO PC in the car!! I miss it already, I have to carry my laptop with me always now until the pc goes back in...just in case of an emergency impromptu web browsing session need arises

Ahhh, but they're all useful.....I still want to add more screens.....I am going to put a 1.8" lcd on the drivers side door panel at the top triangle(where a tweeter would go) & a 2.5" on the passengers side......both just inside of the rear view mirrors, these will be for night vision cameras to supliment the rear view mirrors for parking at night.....with my limo tinted windows I can't see **** while parking at night.....don't want to scuff the rims.....useless....maybe......but I love it

I was wondering how you were going to accomplish the opening you will need for the 12." I originally thought you would cut up the hole in the bottom dash piece you had and the fiberglass around it to the plastic, never thought to do it the way you are going, that looks like it will be alot better, many less hours of sanding to acheive the stock lines.
I unfortuntly do not have any extra inverters at the moment, I do a the 2 ccfl one that I am currently using and the 4 ccfl one that I am planing on putting in down the road when I do the mod to control the brightness. I ripped apart the original frame and I am currently making on out of MDF instead of birch, Its about 3/8 thick, but I think it will still fit and has been easier to get better cuts. I wil update my thread soon I should be getting more done tomorrow.
Sorry about the inverter, I just sold one that I had extra to cartunes with a controller that he was able to use on that BRIGHT 12" screen he has been working on.
Good luck, I might stil have to head down to Brooklyn though to see how this is comming along

yes, I thought of just cutting down into the second opening, but you're right, it would have been much more work rebuilding the shape & getting it to look right...this was the easiest way to keep all of my lines straight & curves unaltered....the only problem will be choosing a color & a finish....I considered a matte black...but it may look real cheap without texture....I considered a high gloss same red as outside of the truck...but that's too custom & gaudy, I'm going more for the factory look....I'm considering a semigloss silver finish...similar to the new navi dash..or the matrix....may look most factory like that...but the alpine face is all black,,,the climate control face is black......I'm still undecided on the final finish. I may also look into some texturing products designed for repairing bumpers & moldings....if I can match the original texture of the plastics I may be able to match this bottom piece pretty close & maintain the oem style & not even spray all of the rest of the plastics....but it would have to be pretty acurate...& that could be harder than just refinishing all the plastics
I am going to just try & order a lot of ccfl's & a dimming invertor to power them.....just have to figure out what to order & from who....I'm just so busy at the shop I haven't had time yet.....maybe tommorow
