so you used 32 LEDs on a 10.4" screen. I estimated 20 for a 7" screen to be uber bright. I hope my light calcs are good for the ccfls too! I kind of invented them all myself -

I bet that lot hurt your eyes to look at!

you got any plans for the dimmer yet?

we have a few knocking round.

this is 12.1" widescreen, after these are lit a min or 2, you see serious spots for awhile & everything else looks dark, they do hurt your eyes

from what I've learned with this, I would do a 7" panel with aroung 16 of these, you could do up to 24 on two power supplies though.

I have a lilli 7" & a lilli 8"..... I think I'm going to open them & see if this can be done with them.

they wouldn't have to be water cooled, I can do a much simpler fan cooled setup..... I didn't want a fan in my dash, but I could do this with pretty quite p4 fan/heatsinks

only problem is it would be about as deep as a head unit, maybe a few inches shorter..... I should be able to do a 7" or 8" air cooled for around $300-$350 or so....

I already have dimming power supplies for my screen, they just need a 3k variable pot to adjust..... I really want to build a circuit that will auto dim these with a photo resister, haven't had time to look into that yet, but it shouldn't be that hard to do.....

for some strange reason one of these power supplies fried on me, I have to get one more...

this is the pwr supply, that site is where I got the led's too.... pretty cool place, I called & spoke to zak, I think it's a small company, I think zak is the main guy, posibaly the only guy there, but there pretty helpful & friendly, not like trying to deal with those ccfl companys if you know what I mean

hmmmm, tring to figure out why one of the power supplies toasted itself(wasn't me!)

this is the cut sheet for the pwr supplies...... after further looking into this I think the issue may be that 12v isn't enough to run this...., but it blew using a 15.6v supply..........

I tried to call them, but they may not be in today........ anyone see these specs have a clue?????? I'm running 11 luxeon 1's on each of two of these & the third runs with 10 luxeon 1's

I didnt see anymention of PWM dimming. is it simply a current based dimmer?

You can build a very simple 15W PWM dimmer which you would just need to replicate a few times.

As for input voltage, what about trying a laptop dc-dc. They output 20V at up to 6A for some models.

it internally dims, I thought pwm, but since you metioned it I looked again & maybe not, just varys the current it seems....... the control is just a variable resistor though 5k pot for 1.... I was told to use a 3k pot for three togeather

of course I could get a 20v power supply, but don't know if I really need to...... I'm not to clear on what this is asking for as far as voltage.... from what I see the 12v should be fine..... they seem to be more concerned with not over voltaging these, as long as the input is over 5v it should be o.k. from what I'm seeing I think......

yeah it definitely isnt pwm. I would look for a pwm as it maybe the dimming that is causin you the problems.

I have a cheap pwm circuit i got off someone on ebay in america. i think it is 15W as i mentioned. YOu would be much better going that route i think.

I just spoke to zak, went over my whole setup...... the only possibilitys we can come up with are the fact that I had a variable resistor that was to big..... he said it shouldn't have caused this though, so it's still unknown what happened, he is going to find out about the voltage to, but again, we both think it should be fine....... he says the only adverse effects of to low voltage would be these not reaching full intensity, not damage....

he is going to contact his rep 7 see if he can find out anything, but as it is I should be fine..... I hate to damage something without knowing why!

new one here in a few days

as far as pwm, these don't require it, & work at varied mw output to dim...... this shouldn't be an issue as these are designed to work this way..they even include the dimming pots with the supply... this setup should be good for many thousands of hours.... for one to fail with less than an hour on it is strange....we'll see when I replace it, he wants the old one back to send it to the manufacturer

my point of using pwm is it normally runs cooler for the LEDs and doesnt need beefy resistors in the control circuit. But they look industrial stuff. your screen is jsut too powerfull for em!

just installed this, now I can honestly say this is really perfect..... better than I had hoped it would be...... I played around with the display properties & got my colors right..... white is white, etc... I have the panel brightness control bottomed all the way down in properties.....there are different programs used to further color correct for like photographers, I may play with that later.

the screen is nice with the led's all the way down....... beautiful picture.....even lighting except the top which is out right now..... it dims pretty low too, as low as you could want it to within reason..... awsome

when I turn up the led's 1/4 turn this screen is bright.... real bright..... beats the alpine at this point, (which beat the lilli originally by a lot) from there it just gets brighter...& brighter..... at full brightness this is rediculously bright...... and the colors still look pretty good since the lcd panel brightness is all the way down..... remember this is only 2/3 of the led's lit

if I go into propertys & turn the panel brightness up when the leds are all the way up this gets super super bright... too bright to use I think.... at that point it starts to look a little washed out, but there is no way I would ever need it up that high.......with the panel brightness all the way down the picture is still nice & vivid even at led full brightness

this is dimmed, not quite all the way:

You can use GammaControl to change the brightness/contrast/gamma

the temperature is not a problem when these led's are turned down to normal.... I won't need my pump to run continueosly in this system..... more like a thermostat that kicks on when necissary...... the pump will be necissary if I run this at or close to full brightness for 15 minutes or more..... the temperature will be well under control........ this is also good because now I can definately add the pc processor to the liquid cooling circuit without fear of the led's being too hot & raising the whole system temp too high... I can now have no cooling fans in the front cabin..... totally silent carpc....

this is screen cranked up.... the alpine above it at max brightness also for comparison :

No problem. If you want GC to control some other things (the dimmer circuit), let me know
