800X1280 narrowscreen???

O.K., this is my latest idea under construction & I'm looking for opinions here.

i am planning on replacing my lilliput 8" with something that has a little more screen area, a 12.1" widescreen turned sideways, to give an end user resolution of 800X1280 max.this will give the approximate same thing as an 8" over an 8" without the seam . One problem I will have is that I can't find anyone that can provide a touch screen overlay for this widescreen, so I may have to go without it initialy.....I think I can live with this since i have a convienient mouse in my center console. another problem I see is that no one provides a front end skin in anything like this resolution.............wonder how much work it would be to modify something like this. first picture is my truck as-is & last is a photoshop image of what it is projected to look like, what do you think both good & bad..............I would like some opinions please.......... btw, this screen is lvds & run directly off of my pentium m dell laptop motherboard, & will be modded for highbrite with "xennon backlight daytime booster", which I will document here as it is done............

this screen is an lvds screen, it is a 12.1" widescreen, I think it's 16:9. it is from a dell 700m laptop that I will be installing in my car to replace the p4 currently installed. I looked at all of my options to go with a low power, low heat design, & the via seemed to anemic to replace a p4, & Istarted looking into mobile processors, as they have all of the attributes that are needed in a car install. I looked into the commell board, but in the end I decided a centrino laptop would have everything I was looking for.

I originally just planned on chopping the laptop up & installing it to the lilli, but in taking it apart I held this screen in my hands & the smoke started coming out off my ears, hmmmm, the rest is what you see here for consideration...... turns out that the dell ati board is awsome, & it is bundled with this rotating utility that makes this 80X1280 possible. I am really thinking of seeing if I can get an 8" screen that will interface with the laptop board the way this one does(direct lvds), & try to keep the clean factory look of my current install, I'm a little afraid this larger screen install my start to look a little TOO over the top, but then again It may also wind up being pretty cool.

since I'm not sure I figured to ask you guys what your thoughts were. I do have the ability to install this screen as I have the skills to build, & I own a body shop with body men & painters on staff, but it will involve modding & ultimately painting the dash pieces which to me takes away from the clean factory look of the moulded textured original abs black dash, which I have already went to great lengths to preserve.

to install this screen the way I would install it will take alot of work to get it to look "right", & i'm also trying to decide if the end results are going to be worth the effort...........

OPINIONS PLEASE>>>>> I don't normally give a **** what anyone else thinks of my stuff, but here I'm hoping to get input from others to help me decide...........

If you decide to get rid of that screen, get ahold of me, I have a nice lvds controller I could use with it, and it would fit my dash perfectly!

I'll keep that in mind cartunes, as I just planned on ebaying it if I can't or won't use it. it kinda hinges on weather I can get a smaller lvds screen, preferably 8" 4:3 . the big question here is that since it is part of the dell laptop, even though it is lvds, obviously the bios doesn't have any selections of other screens like a normal lvds board would.

I don't know what to look for as far as compatability here...as far as how many bits this display is, & whatever other factors come into play... I was thinking of contacting an lcd supplier to see if they could shed some light here, I've worked with earthlcd.com a few years back....maybe I might have to send them the whole setup to figure it out?I do remember though that they are very expensive as I paid $300 for an lcd control board & almost another $300 for a touchscreen overlay with interface. do you have any other knowledge as far as this goes? I'm thinking I may be limited to a 16:9 for this reason, although the dell has all of the 4:3 resolutions available for even the lvds interface.

I saw that you bought that 12.1" brite panel off ebay....I was going to pick one up just for the hell of it....but haven't done so yet. If I do put this widescreen in as shown I plan on adding backlight to it....I have done this on a few other projects & as long as you have space behind the panel & aren't concerned about keeping it ultra slim like an lcd should be, it works great. instead of using cold cathodes or standard backlighting like whats in the screen you bought, I was going to back this with a hid headlamp bulb in a reflector assy, end result will kind of look like a picture tube if you can picture it, I have the space for this & you'd be surprised at how brite you can get something like this. this particular lcd will work well with this type of setup as the board on the back of the lcd is tiny enough that even if it stayed put it wouldn't block much of the backlamp, but it looks pretty easy to just hinge it back to fully uncover the rear of the screen, & the rear layer of the lcd is pretty translucent to begin with, when I run the screen out of the housing it projects enough light out of the back to light a whole room up at night, transparency works both ways....on another one I did like this I actually had to remove a rear "layer" or two to allow more light in from behind.

a hid setup should work awsome, as the color "temprature" of the lighting source is an important factor, I will use either a 4300k or 5000k bulb to provide correct lighting "color" . the only slight concern here is heat disapation, in the winter it will work as a benifit, but I may have to take cooling & airflow into consideration, especially in the summer, wouldn't want to melt a hole in the middle of the lcd, this could be an issue as true hid's run HOT, but are very efficient power wise....again this will only be suplimental lighting & at night she will run off of just the built in backlamp.

I'll post a few pictures of the rear of the screen & the interface, but I've got to shrink them first......
