Stumbled across these as part of my research...

They are a new LCD based on nanotechnology that is 4x easier to read than conventional LCDs.
they are working on colour versions and they can be applied to any surface - even tranparent ones to make HUDs etc. They should end up cheaper than current LCDs and they require very little power and they work down to -35 and up to +80 degree C so no problems with use in cars then!
Oh well, in a few years we may see them commercially available in colour but until then we'll just have to wait and make do.
EDIT: from the site: "Dramatically reduced power consumption In most lighting conditions the displays are so reflective they need no backlighting and their low voltage DC operation makes drive and control simple and cost-effective. They’re also bi-stable over a period of several hours – so once switched on, pixels stay coloured without power until actively bleached."
potentially only night time backlighting required (easy hook up to car circuits) and you can leave them dispalying a car logo while your Pcis turned off!! sweet!
