What about the video cards that are designed with RCA outputs. I would expect that quality to be good, not as good as VGA, but I would assume better then the crapverter. Im really going to try cheaper solutions before hacking something apart, things I can return and sell back one ebay you know.
I know the rca output on the board itself sucks.

The screens themselves don't have a good native resolution. That's the problem.

Nice conversion, Josh! Very impressive. I'd love to see pictures.

Clean: It's not the quality of the signal, it's the quality of the screen and how the video signal is encoded. The concept of a "pixel" on an NTSC screen is non-existent. There are 525 horizontal scan lines on NTSC. The number of vertical lines varies by screen. Nevertheless, the picture is derived from an analog signal and the vertical component is inferred from the signal. This means you get a fuzzy display because the signal is analog (that is, it doesn't always strike the exact same pixel). You can see the effect when you look at the small print at the bottom of a car commercial on television -you can't read it. Anything under 16 point font size is difficult to read and you'll notice that all television fonts tend to be sans-serif. Fonts like Times Roman are just too fuzzy to read unless they are very large.

You say it will only do 10% of what you want, what's the other 90%? It does AM/FM, mp3, DVD, TV, XM, reverse cam and you can add Sat nav. That's mostly it for folks, other than running OBDII or some more specific apps like voice recognition.

But don't get me wrong -I'm not trying to discourage you from trying. It would be a cool mod in it's own right!

I say 10% because I would only use the radio and CD player. the one I want to get doesn't have the DVD player. Although you can add all those other components, the cost is way too much, which is why the computer system was implemented in my car at least. For the price of adding navigation to a pioneer unit, I could have an entire computer system. I wouldn't use any of the other functions. Adding a TV, XM, GPS (that doesn't have the functionality of the computer GPS), DVD to a pioneer unit that incorporates, I could buy a couple of computers. I only want it for the amplified signal, the radio, and the cd player. It does play mp3's, but I don't even use a CD player anymore anyway because I have all my song on the computer. You dont' get internet, or any of the things I can with the computer without paying out the ying yang and sacrificing functionality and upgradeability. The radio will always stay the same along with the CD player if I ever use. DVD's I don't use much because I have them all on my computer. I just like the fact of taking out the amp, having a good radio and cd player, and a nice look with a fold out screen. The resolution is pretty high on the one I am looking at. Im going to give it a try, and if it doesn't look close to what I want, Im just going to sell it back on ebay.
later

Edit: Plus if it works, its the same price as buying a touchscreen and amp, plus a USB add on or audio card that gives you a good equalizer, and it looks pirty. That is if it works
