Powering LCD that has a clock

I just got an Innovatek IN-7031 (motorized in-dash, 800x600 - but no vga).

Monitor seems to work well, but wanted some input regarding power.

The unit has a Battery + lead as well as an ACC + lead. The in-line fuse is on the battery lead, and it appears that the ACC lead is only used to tell the unit to turn on.

The problem I have is the unit has a clock built-in. I wanted to run it off my PSU for a regulated +12V, but that doesn't keep the clock current as the PSU shuts off the power.

Should I:
1.) assume that if the set it up this way they designed it to run off 14V,
2.) install a lilliput style egg voltage reg that is connected directly to the battery. (will these draw much more current then the clock on it's own?)
3.) put in a capaciter and a relay and run it off the battery overnight, but use the relay to switch to regulated power as soon as the PSU starts.

Thoughts?

Simon.

I personally would assume that, since its an "in-dash" unit, the manufacturer has asumed you're going to hook it up to the 12VDC power in your car, and have built the unit accordingly, or have at least provided an appropriate 12VDC power supply.

Take a closer look at the specs for the display and what came with it.

specs

That's what annoyed me the most - neither the manual or the unit have any voltage specs in/on them. The essentially 1 pg manual simply says what colour is for what purpose on the wiring harness.

i think he is more concerned about not what the wires do, but if it can recieve non-regulated voltage....and I'm saying more then likely it can
