A double-din sized LCD touchscreen

No, not just yet

I wanted to get a discussion going on what it would take to convince a manufacturer to start producing these. A bolt-on solution that needs no fabrication, disassembling, bondo, none of that trouble. It would simply slide into your factory double din space.

Does anyone have any demands on features? I have a few...
  • carPC friendly (maybe some power/reset buttons, USB ports, etc)
  • Maximize LCD space, minimize size of buttons.
  • Infrared reciever with credit card sized remote control with customizable software
  • Linux and Windows support
  • Removable faceplate or (even better) a sliding door to hide it

but the problem with that is all the posers would have a carputer and it wouldn't be a "custom" job any more...hence it wouldn't be geeky or cool anymore...lol

people still wouldn't do it if it were double-din, so it wont become mainstream, cuz you still have to make the computer, find out where to mount it, and all the power stuff for it, its still not gonna be easy at all. im all for this

In all reality... this is probably the closest we're gonna get. The guy charges almost $200 to take your Lilliput and turn it into a double din sized unit to be swapped right into your dash, with plenty of room for a mini-itx board and all the goodies. He even gives it the auto-on mod. I think that's a good deal if you have $200 laying around.

i think its a good idea for those that want to replace thier headunit. id settle for a single din unit that iso mounts in.... just like an aftermarket alpine/kenwood/pioneer.

if only they would make a touch monitor with a vga input!

Sounds like a good idea, but keep in mind many cars don't have a double din. Most chrysler/dodge vehicles have an odd 1-1/2 din space for instance.
