LED backlighting is still not used becasue it is not as straightforward as you think. If you point me to somewhere i can get 1W while LEDS that run cool then please show me as i would love to try them and eliminate the inverters from the solution all together.
The LEDs MUST be drived by PWM controler IC (eg. MAX ICs) in order to cooldown, you can not light them by DC, that is the key point.

DragonBTV has emailed me the doc that he posted about. I'd be happy to host it, except it's in Chinese. I may be wrong here, but I don't think it will be useful to the Brits and Yanks that seem to be interested/working on this project. Correct me if I am wrong.

I am confused now. Should i post new development ideas here or int he other thread and keep this for info.
Anyway....DragonBTV, thanks for that link to superbright, it a vary good site. It is a bit slow and i am in work so i will look later.
i had a quick look at their screens and they upgrade current LCDs such as this one... http://sharp-world.com/products/devi..._LCY00030A.pdf
This is a 6.4" sharp panel - simialar to my new sharp TFT. It has a min contrast ratio of 100 (mine is 60) and they have it up to 1000nit using what looks like a CCFL upgrade. See here: http://www.superbright.cn/EN/products.asp
This place would be perfect to source high brightness LCDs or backlight parts from.
JCD, they also do inverters that could possibly power our CCFLs. They do inverters for 2 to 18 CCFLs! This place must be simply putting new CCFLs in and replacing the diffusers etc to boost contrast. Have you contacted that place I found the other day? I will contact them tonight and try and get some samples of their films.
Dragon, is ther any chance you could dig around and find out exactly what measures they are taking to boost the brightness as they are using LCD panle very similar to ours. Cheers.

this usperbright place rocks. check this out: WD1204 Series
4CCFL Inverter,supporting PWM,optional for auto-temperature /auto-brightness control.
I feel a 4 tube redsign coming on....
The temperature control is useful for guys in cold places as it warms the screen up by increasing the current.

Well we can do it either way, I can just put all the info we find into the faq at the top of the thread or just continue discussion in the other thread.
I havent had time to contact the company about that stuff
but thats what I was saying earlier, they were taking a standard LCD and just bumping it up.
dammit no one listens to me!!!!

I listen to you honey. but if we are going for 1000+nit (what they call medium bright!!!!) we may need new fims to boost the contrast.
