from everything I've gathered, eefl's are nearly impossible to get your hands on, I have called a few different times to china.....spoke in english to a few....got nowhere.... kept getting references to devolopment & prototypes....but never any off the shelf..this is how much....you can have them next week.....not at any price..... eefl's are without a doubt the best solution bar none...but whens the last time you've seen eefl's used in anything......I mean sharp, sony & panasonic aren't even getting these yet as far as I can see... I gave up but you guys have buying power if it's for the masses......
ccfl's don't sound too impossible for you guys to get into the stock screen....may be your most practical solutution aside from folding the board back....which will give you a rather deep housing considering the boards are almost as long as the screen is high...
as far as the targeted price you guys have in mind...I don't see personally why this wouldn't be worth double what you originally intended...especially when you consider what a factory high bright screen costs...... I think if someone marketed a 7" touchscreen with 800 nit brightness for almost $600 it would still sell really well.....
I wish I had better answers for you guys with this.....but If I wanted to high brite my 7" or 8" I know I would fold the board back...... even if you look at any high bright factory modified lcd it almost always consists of an extended housing....... your screens are small enough that this doesn't sound to impractical...but again...this isn't the original goal of this thread....

What kind of LEDs are you planning on doing? SMDs are really thin, so maybe that would be a good solution

it's not the size as much as the heat that is the problem....

I don't think that SMD LEDs get hot enough to cause problems. But they are a ***** to solder

wrong. they get jsut as hot if they are 1W power LEDs. if you used normal surface mount then you would need hundreds.

if your thinking of surface mount designed leds that are used to light up buttons & stuff then yes...but they are no where near bright enough....anything in an led design that is bright enough will also be too hot..... that's the real benifit if eefl's....NO HEAT....or so they claim..... as far as I know juist about any light source will bring heat...even multiple ccfl's will have there heat issues....but not as much as super bright led's.... I also found interesting stuff on fiber optics for romote mounting the light sources.... but I don't know how practical or bright this can get....

turbocad,
We can do the CCFLs i am sure but it just needs to many wires. We would split out tubes in two and have a bolt on module to the back of the screen with 4 pairs of wires going to them but this is not ideal for lots of reasons and we want to do it properly. I have seen EEFLs used in LG screens - they used 20 tubes in a 32" screen and got 500nit brightness. I am pretty damn sure i can get over 1000nit out of my design if only i could get my hands on the tubes. I am very tempted to give china a call now but i might call them tomorrow night from my work phone!

CCFLs will be warm but not as warm as LEDs. EEFLs will be even cooler.
I jsut wish we could get the damn inverters. The electrode length on the EEFLs is also worrying. Currently they are 20mm which is too long.

I think you could do ccfl's with the inverters housed in a remote location besides the rear of the screen....may want to have a well shielded harness & distance couldn't be to great though.... if lg has a screen in production then it is more promising
I m,ay wait a week or so before building an elaborate liquid cooled design for my screen.... it would kill me to see an eefl' solution right after I've done the luxeons..... I wouldn't mind spending more to do it with eefl's..... I can just use my luxeons in my taillights ..... but I will finish the luxeons if it drags too long...... because I WANT F#&KING BACKLIGHTING!!!!

Well I think for the amount of room you have to work with turbo I bet you can pull it off with the luxeons

I don't doubt that I can pull it off..... but I still would rather have eefl's if that was possible.....

I was talking about surface mount... and yeh... I know that you'd need hundreds.

You'd be surprised how bright the surface mount LEDs are. I've got them in my gague needles, and they are bright, and they are visible even when the sun hits them.

dude. trust me. the surface mount LEDs you are talking about would need thousands - and that would cost a forutune.
I have done so many price breakdowns and design trade-offs using different LEDs it aint funny!
small 5000mcd you would need over 1600 leds!
YOu dont realise that the diffusers east about 80% of your light output and then the screen another 90%
YOu could use smt 1W biut they need just as much cooling as the luxeons stars.
