As long as the sensor remains connected to the lilli, you will be fine -- just think of the eye as a switch that periodically connects the comport's DSR line to ground level when "fired" upon with a remote (as can be seen on the scope image earlier in this thread). I would use shielded wire, although interference is highly unlikely at these frequencies.

Sure, the "Igor plugin" comes with a little schematic. To view, click on "About HW" in the plugin's settings window.

Also...where can I get an eye?
Um, Radio Shack I guess

Does the lilli itself still respond to its own remote (on/off, menu, AV/TV)?
See if the right half of the schematic in your version of the Igor plugin matches your comport wiring. Earlier versions of the plugin come with a slightly different diagram -- the link between DCD and TxD is essential.
I'm using Girder 3.2.9 and Igor 4.04

i got it working with a old ps2 dvd remote. The other remote was the problem. it sent the same signal for every button until you changed the source (tv,dvd, etc). I've had to try it with 4 or 5 remotes to find one that sent a clear signal for each button, but its workin great now! Wish i hadda remote with more buttons than this one but its better than nothing.

incorrect URL
Hi guys,
If your turned on by remote controls, checkout the ondigital remote and IR buddy. If you can solder, by cutting off the end that comes with the IR buddy and rewiring ( Wiring changes ) you get a remote control with full qwerty keyboard inside, which you can programme using girder as your keyboard. I have exchanged mails with Andy from Digibox, as he was interested in doing the mods and selling the finished item to those who are interested.
The item I purchased can be found at Remote and IR Buddy
Make sure you check that your purchase includes the IR Buddy, as he sells the remotes without as well (and I made that mistake ops: !)
Once you have done that, it is a case of getting girder to recognise the commands and away you go. I have not yet completed the recognition of all the keys yet, but I believe that others around these forums have. I just need time to get around to it. If only her indoors didn't want to go to Ikea this afternoon . . . . . .
At least you won't have to prise open you lilli !
cheers KPJUK

I've been doing this on my living room PC for years...it costs like $8 in Radioshack parts, and you can use Winlirc and autoHotKey scripts to control everything from DVD software to volume, etc., from the remote of your choice. You could even script it so that you could adjust your touchscreen brightness, contrast, screen position, etc, from...(drumroll please)...your touchscreen, or use an old remote to re-code button presses on your factory steering column for your PC, or create a custom controller mounted in your center console...the possibilities are endless.

never knew that. I think I might want to try this. In all honesty, how long would it take for someone with little soldering skills to complete this install?

About 2-3 hours fabricating, if you have any skill at all, and additional time to set up either [Winlirc (free) + AutoHotkey (free)] or Girder (buy). Setup time is as long as the number of functions you want to run.
http://lnx.manoweb.com/lirc/ This page pretty much holds your hand through the fab of the IR reciever, which will gather IR signals from any IR remote...like my posts, this page is verbose, full of detail, but probably could be a lot, lot shorter. After this, all you would need is the software if you wanted to just control your computer from an IR remote. All the parts are available at RadioShack.
http://www.lirc.org/transmitters.html Here is the transmitter. You need a transmitter if you want to use your computer to send remote signals to other devices.
http://winlirc.sourceforge.net/ This is WinLIRC, the program that translates the signals collected from the IR receiver to digital code that can be stored on the computer and used later. It watches the ports the receiver is hooked up to, and records whatever it sees. This is the "learning" part of your new learning remote control system. See the winLIRC home page for usage instructions.
http://www.autohotkey.com/ This program simply watches for certain things to happen on the PC, and triggers scripted events that you specify. You can use it to watch for digital code from WinLIRC, and then mimmick keyboard keypress sequences and mouse movement based on the IR codes it sees. You can use Autohotkey to translate keypresses, button presses in your favorite front end, or codes from a Hitatchi remote into codes a JVC device understands. You can then tell Autohotkey to send that remote signal to, for example, your touchscreen monitor, or to a remote audio device, or to your VCR to tell it to record, etc. You could write an autohotkey script to send a remote code that turns on a surround sound amplifier and dims the lights whenever you start your favorite DVD software. If you have autorun enabled, you can make these things happen upon DVD insertion. You can tell it to write "War and Peace" in a word document and store it in the recycle bin whenever you press "page up" on your cable box remote, if you want. You can even use it to replace all instances of "Dwight Schrute" with "diapers" whenever you type it.

Probably because I link to him in his other thread (extend lilliput sensor).
Take me sometime to find the correct search words. I knew it there cuz I remember I read it sometime ago .

Basically, you need a soldering iron and a de-solder pump. I found that the pump work much better, cleaner than solder wick. The image below is my soldering iron and pump
For the hardware, it will take you about an hr. It's not that hard just attention and carefull eat up your time. NOTE: I only link the image. mox took these pictures below. NOT ME.
Buy a 9pin female D SUB connector and solder it according to the image below
You should then get something like this to plug in the COM port. You can get a D SUB cover or use hot glue and cover it up like I did. .
In the image below, the RED wire is DSR and the other is ground.
Lilliput sensor work very well with this mod.
I have a Panasonic sensor from digikey and it didn't work reliable with this mod. Instead, I have to do the simple LIRC circuit like the one on this page http://lnx.manoweb.com/lirc/ or the circuit base on the Igor Gesko page.

Wow, thanks for the credits, guys! Nice to see a revival of this thread. I've been enjoying the little hack for nearly two years now without a glitch.
